Scientists are exploring applications ranging from treating cancer to enhancing human capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn about CRISPR&#8217;s evolving role in shaping our future, as outlined by Walter Isaacson in his book <em>The Code Breaker<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-future-of-crispr\">The Future of CRISPR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Isaacson discusses the potential future of CRISPR technology, explaining that many of CRISPR\u2019s realized applications will likely be enhanced and reused (for example, CRISPR-derived tests and vaccines for COVID-19 could be used to combat other viruses). He also notes that gene therapy trials for both viruses and diseases, including Huntington\u2019s disease (a painful neurodegenerative condition), cancer, and congenital blindness, are already underway. Finally, Isaacson lists two other potential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-has-crispr-been-used-for\/\">applications of CRISPR<\/a> that could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-make-a-difference-in-the-world\/\">change the world<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-biohacking\/\">biohacking<\/a> and bioweaponry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isaacson describes <strong>biohacking <\/strong>as a social movement aimed at democratizing biotechnology. But Isaacson implies that biohacking may also have serious risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: The term \u201cbiohacking\u201d doesn\u2019t exclusively refer to the movement to democratize biotechnology; the term is also applied to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparentlabs.com\/blogs\/all\/what-is-biohacking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other ways of optimizing human life<\/a>, including diets like intermittent fasting and injections with performance enhancement drugs. Zayner has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2018\/02\/biohacking-stunts-crispr\/553511\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expressed remorse about the self-injection stunt<\/a> he pulled, since he fears that biohackers will push themselves beyond normal limits to conduct harmful self-experiments. This admission sheds some light on the serious risks associated with biohacking\u2014the culture of the movement is such that participants are competing with each other to become the best. The dangers associated with biohacking led California to pass <a href=\"https:\/\/frontlinegenomics.com\/biohackers-and-diy-gene-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the first law regulating the practice<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Isaacson explains that many officials worry that CRISPR technology could be used to engineer <strong>bioweapons<\/strong>. For this reason, the US Department of Defense (DoD) sponsors research on <em>anti-CRISPRs<\/em>: naturally occurring systems that help viruses overcome CRISPR defenses in bacteria. Some scientists, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/who-is-jennifer-doudna\/\">Jennifer Doudna<\/a>, are working on creating and implementing anti-CRISPR technology that could be used to fend off a CRISPR-derived bioweapon. Isaacson also notes that the DoD is currently pursuing research on the use of genetic enhancements to create supersoldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>The Future of CRISPR Research<\/strong><br><br>Since Isaacson published <em>The Code Breaker <\/em>in 2021, scientists have made several breakthroughs regarding CRISPR\u2019s potential applications. Let\u2019s review what\u2019s changed since 2021 for some of the potential applications Isaacson mentions.<br><br><strong>Scientists continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/who-invented-crispr-technology\/\">develop CRISPR<\/a> gene therapies for viruses and diseases. <\/strong>For example, research thus far has had promising results with regard to the treatment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0753332222001317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexually transmissible viruses<\/a> like herpes, HPV, and hepatitis. Additionally, Chinese scientists have used CRISPR to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/china-s-crispr-push-animals-promises-better-meat-novel-therapies-and-pig-organs-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deliver antiviral gene therapies to pigs<\/a> to make their organs more suitable for implantation in humans, and CRISPR is being tested for its potential to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2022\/12\/13\/1140384354\/crispr-improves-cancer-immunotherapy-car-t-cell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enhance the effectiveness of cancer therapies<\/a> in patients whose immune systems are too damaged to respond positively to the treatment.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Scientists are also applying CRISPR to non-human life forms.<\/strong> For example, an artist is using CRISPR to <a href=\"https:\/\/dnascience.plos.org\/2023\/12\/14\/perfume-from-extinct-flowers-thanks-to-ancient-dna-and-synthetic-biology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recreate the fragrances of extinct flowers<\/a>, a Dalmatian breeder is using CRISPR to <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jlb\/article\/10\/1\/lsad003\/7073984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prevent health problems in his dogs<\/a>, and scientists are using CRISPR to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/welcome-to-the-crispr-zoo-1.19537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slow the extinction of honeybees<\/a>. Perhaps most controversially, some scientists have used CRISPR to create <em>chimeras<\/em>\u2014or mixed-species hybrids, usually involving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2021\/04\/15\/international-team-creates-first-chimeric-human-monkey-embryos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">monkeys<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2016\/jun\/06\/organ-transplants-chimera-pigs-geneticists-human-stem-cells-embryos-brains-injection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pigs<\/a>\u2014to assist with human disease treatment.<br><br><strong>Scientists are also studying CRISPR\u2019s potential purposes in warfare. <\/strong>Some scientists speculate that CRISPR could be used to <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2021-11-gene-weapon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">create and spread viruses with a \u201czombification\u201d effect<\/a> and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fbioe.2023.1166601\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">create bioweapons out of snake venom<\/a>. Others speculate that <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/neoscope\/scientist-tweaks-genetically-altered-supersoldiers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human DNA could be spliced with animal DNA<\/a> to give soldiers advantageous traits like ultra-enhanced vision.<br><br>Finally, it\u2019s important to know that <strong>scientists are working on enhancing not only CRISPR\u2019s applications, but also the technology itself. <\/strong>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/news\/scientists-use-quantum-biology-ai-sharpen-genome-editing-tool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advancements in quantum biology and artificial intelligence<\/a> have enabled scientists to better understand which gRNAs are most suitable for experiments in the cells of different species.
