That\u2019s why <strong>addressing the challenge of wealth inequality isn\u2019t important <strong>only<\/strong><\/strong> <strong>from an economic point of view\u2014it\u2019s vital to the preservation of a democratic society<\/strong>. According to Thomas Piketty, inequality of wealth can be minimized by taking several concrete steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A global wealth tax<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transparency in the international financial system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Progressive taxation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-a-global-wealth-tax\">1) A Global Wealth Tax<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Piketty argues that, since the 1980s, wealth inequality has made a troubling comeback that demands a response. <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/capital-in-the-twenty-first-century\/1-page-summary#part-6-the-global-wealth-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>His proposed solution is a global wealth tax.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such a tax would be progressive, with higher fortunes taxed at a higher marginal rate than smaller fortunes. The tax would be relatively low (perhaps 1-2% of net worth per year) and would be assessed annually on the combined net worth of market assets of <em>all<\/em> asset classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Piketty argues that <strong>the purpose of the tax would not be to raise revenue<\/strong>. Instead, its purpose would be to stop the unchecked accumulation of wealth by the global hyper-wealthy, end the financial opacity that allows so much of the world\u2019s wealth to exist in the shadows, and bring some much-needed redistribution of economic resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-greater-financial-transparency-for-the-global-financial-system\">2) Greater Financial Transparency for the Global Financial System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Piketty further argues that even <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/capital-in-the-twenty-first-century\/1-page-summary#bringing-transparency-to-the-global-financial-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the <em>assessment <\/em>of such a tax would bring great clarity to the global financial system<\/a>, as it would show precisely who owns what assets, how unequally wealth is distributed, and what policies might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/melania-trumps-be-best\/\">be best<\/a> suited to address it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The assessment of the global wealth tax would require significant (and unprecedented) sharing of banking data between countries and cooperation between tax authorities. But this degree of transparency would enable countries to accurately calculate the net worth of each of their citizens\u2014regardless of where those citizens choose to hold their assets\u2014and significantly cut down on tax evasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-progressive-taxation\">3) Progressive Taxation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Piketty argues that<strong> progressivity\u2014in<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/capital-in-the-twenty-first-century\/1-page-summary#the-necessity-of-progressive-taxation\"><strong> <\/strong><\/a><strong>which the tax burden falls most heavily on society\u2019s wealthiest\u2014is <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/capital-in-the-twenty-first-century\/1-page-summary#the-necessity-of-progressive-taxation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>necessary for the tax system to function fairly<\/strong><\/a>. He writes that if the system instead taxed the wealthy at lower rates and the poor at higher rates, middle- and working-class people (who vastly outnumber the rich) would rightly begin to question why they should pay a higher share than the rich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Piketty notes that progressivity encompasses more than just the taxation <em>rates <\/em>applied to income. Progressivity also comes from the <em>kind <\/em>of income being taxed. In particular, taxes on wealth and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/inherited-wealth\/\">inherited wealth<\/a> (both of which are forms of capital income) especially could be powerful tools for scaling back the wealth inequality that\u2019s defined most developed countries for the past 40 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do you think about the growing wealth gap in our society?
