In this context, he says, to \u201csubdue\u201d doesn\u2019t mean to dominate or exploit. Rather, it means to direct the world in a way that helps it flourish and increase in beauty and usefulness. In other words, we\u2019re responsible for helping the world (including other people) reach its full potential. Jesus epitomizes this kind of servant leadership: Despite having ultimate authority as God, he didn\u2019t exploit humanity for his own benefit. Instead, he improved the lives of the poor, the sick, and the marginalized, helping <em>them <\/em>flourish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can follow Jesus\u2019 example and <strong>embrace servant leadership by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-build-strong-relationships\/\">building strong relationships<\/a> with the people around you and creating positive change wherever you can.<\/strong> This increases other people\u2019s confidence and trust in you, so they\u2019ll be more likely to accept you and help you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/steps-to-achieve-your-goals\/\">achieve your goals<\/a>, even if you don\u2019t have any official authority. Maxwell says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/living-a-life-of-service\/\">serving others<\/a> makes them more likely to follow you and help you succeed because it shows you care about them. When people know you care about them, they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-21-irrefutable-laws-of-leadership#laws-of-character\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">happier and more loyal<\/a>, which in turn makes them more productive and inspired to do good work. To show care for people, <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-21-irrefutable-laws-of-leadership\/law-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learn about their interests and dreams<\/a> and incorporate that knowledge into your leadership style. For instance, you may offer to mentor them in a skill they want to learn. This mirrors Scroggins\u2019s advice to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/5-ways-to-love\/\">build strong relationships<\/a>. Maxwell also suggests improving your own skills so you can better help others\u2014in Scroggins\u2019s framing, so you can create greater positive change.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>The Relationship Between Servant Leadership and Religion<\/strong><br><br>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/servant-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Servant Leadership<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>Robert K. Greenleaf agrees with Scroggins that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/servant-leadership#what-is-servant-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">servant leadership is altruistic, focused on meeting others\u2019 needs instead of your own<\/a> (helping them flourish instead of exploiting them, in Scroggins\u2019s framing). However, Greenleaf defines this as a <em>social responsibility, <\/em>rather than one given by God. Religion is one way of uniting individuals with the world around them, Greenleaf says, implying that this unity is what inspires altruism. It\u2019s not the <em>only <\/em>way, though, so servant leadership isn\u2019t limited to the traditionally religious.<br><br>While servant leadership may not be <em>limited <\/em>to religious individuals, research suggests it may be more <em>common <\/em>in these groups. One study of almost 180,000 people from 126 countries found that <a href=\"https:\/\/eprints.whiterose.ac.uk\/177793\/3\/Bennett\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">religious individuals (and even non-religious individuals living in highly religious countries) were more likely to help others<\/a>. Thus, the researchers suggest that religion might encourage altruistic behavior. It may do this by promoting altruism as a social norm or by promoting the belief that God (or gods) rewards altruism and punishes selfishness.<br><br>By connecting servant leadership to God\u2019s command in Genesis and using Jesus as an example of this leadership, Scroggins arguably supports these interpretations. God\u2019s command sets an expectation for how humanity should behave, and Jesus\u2019 example reinforces that expectation, solidifying it as a social norm for Christians. God\u2019s command and Jesus\u2019 example also show that God values altruism and dislikes selfishness, suggesting that he would reward the former and punish the latter.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are the principles of servant leadership in Christianity?
