In his book <em>Verbal Judo<\/em>, George Thompson explains mushin and how you can cultivate it and use it to great advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more to learn what mushin is and how to apply it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-mushin\">What Is <em>Mushin<\/em>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What is <em>mushin<\/em>? When Thompson describes <em>mushin<\/em>, he\u2019s describing a state of mind that originated in Zen Buddhist teachings and went on to inform the practice of the martial arts. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-way-of-zen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Way of Zen<\/em><\/a>, Alan Watts explains that <em>wu-hsin <\/em>(or <em>wuxin<\/em>), as it\u2019s taught in Zen Buddhism, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-way-of-zen\/1-page-summary#taoism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a state of \u201cno mind\u201d<\/a> or \u201cun-self-consciousness\u201d you can experience when you let your mind work without trying to direct it. Some people consider <em>mushin<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.karatebyjesse.com\/musings-on-mushin-karates-equivalent-of-mindfulness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analogous with mindfulness<\/a>, which involves stepping back from your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/thoughts-feelings-and-behaviors\/\">thoughts and feelings<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/wherever-you-go-there-you-are#what-is-mindfulness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">simply observe them<\/a>, according to Jon Kabat-Zinn\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/wherever-you-go-there-you-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Wherever You Go, There You Are<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To martial arts practitioners, <em>mushin<\/em> is also known as one of three \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/genecrawford.medium.com\/three-states-of-the-warriors-mind-f2e66866c59d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">states of the warrior\u2019s mind<\/a>.\u201d <em>Zanshin<\/em> is the \u201cfighting mind,\u201d a mental state where you\u2019re alert and prepared to act. <em>Fudoshin<\/em> is the \u201cimmovable mind,\u201d a mental state where you\u2019re determined to reach your goal. <em>Mushin<\/em> is the \u201cmind without mind,\u201d a mental state where you don\u2019t feel preoccupied by anything and instead remain open to everything. Martial arts students learn that when you let your mind go quiet, you <a href=\"https:\/\/budobum.blogspot.com\/2015\/02\/states-of-mind-mushin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">avoid making assumptions<\/a> about the situation or trying to force a specific outcome. That\u2019s exactly what Thompson advises when someone yells at you: Instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/jumping-to-conclusions-psychology\/\">jumping to conclusions<\/a>, calmly listen and figure out how to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Mushin<\/em> in Verbal Judo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thompson explains <em>mushin<\/em> as a mental state where you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/hub\/personal-life\/relationships\/personal\/how-to-stay-calm-in-an-argument\/\">remain calm<\/a> even amid a chaotic situation, intentionally observe what\u2019s happening around you, and stay in control of how you respond. He explains that <strong>staying calm enables you to stay centered, no matter how stressful the situation or how much the other person resists resolving the conflict<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thompson notes that cultivating <\/strong><strong><em>mushin<\/em><\/strong><strong> also enables you to let go of any fear or anger that you might naturally, even justifiably, feel when someone is insulting or berating you<\/strong>. <em>Mushin<\/em> ties into another lesson of Verbal Judo: It\u2019s better to deflect, rather than engage with, verbal abuse, particularly if you work in a public-facing role, like customer service. For example, you might draw on <em>mushin<\/em> when a customer yells at you because their delivery was late, the shipment was wrong, and on and on with more complaints. Even if you feel frustrated, you can focus on listening calmly. That way, instead of struggling to get a word in edgewise or obsessing over what you\u2019ll say when they finally pause to take a breath, you can focus on engaging more thoughtfully with the conversation and resolving the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Thompson advises staying calm in the face of verbal abuse, but sometimes it\u2019s not so simple. For example, many women find it scary or dangerous to turn down advances from men, who can view women as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/shortcuts\/2019\/mar\/25\/being-a-woman-is-scary-the-unspoken-danger-of-declining-a-mans-advances\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">owing them attention<\/a> and sometimes respond to rejection with abuse. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/men-explain-things-to-me\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Men Explain Things to Me<\/em><\/a>, Rebecca Solnit writes that society teaches men they have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/men-explain-things-to-me\/1-page-summary#the-fight-for-womens-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">right to control women<\/a>: how they behave, when they talk, and even if they\u2019re allowed to live. In the same vein, Margaret Atwood has noted that while men fear that women will laugh at them, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/kued\/nosafeplace\/articles\/nightmare.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">women fear that men will kill them<\/a>. And for some groups of women\u2014women of color, trans women, and women who do sex work\u2014refusing men\u2019s advances is particularly likely to result in aggression and violence.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is mushin?
