This means having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/an-internal-locus-of-control\/\">sense of control<\/a> over your actions, work, and life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below we&#8217;ll look at Abdaal&#8217;s three suggestions about how to empower yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-pretend-you-re-already-empowered\">1. Pretend You\u2019re Already Empowered<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abdaal\u2019s first suggestion about how to empower yourself is to be bold.<\/strong> Even if you don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re in control, you can still <em>act <\/em>like you are. Imagine yourself as somebody with great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/brene-brown-confidence\/\">confidence and self-esteem<\/a>, and pretend to be that person. With time and practice, it will feel less and less like pretending.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words: Fake it until you make it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: This tactic is often called \u201cacting as if,\u201d and it\u2019s common advice for people who struggle to project confidence. For example, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/goals\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Goals<\/em><\/a>, motivational speaker Brian Tracy suggests envisioning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-become-the-person-you-want-to-be-2\/\">the person you want to be<\/a> and then <em>acting as if <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/goals\/1-page-summary#3-reject-self-limiting-beliefs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you already are that person<\/a>. One way to start is by finding a role model\u2014someone who\u2019s already acting the way you want to act\u2014and emulating them. Tracy adds that you can get yourself into your role model\u2019s mindset by dressing like them, adopting some of their values (especially regarding work), and, if possible, directly asking them for advice.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-see-how-you-ve-already-improved-then-keep-improving\">2. See How You\u2019ve Already Improved, Then Keep Improving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Abdaal\u2019s second tip for self-empowerment is to constantly assess and improve your abilities.<strong> <\/strong>This helps because <strong>knowing that you\u2019re good at what you do will give you a sense of power and control. <\/strong>So, if you\u2019re ever feeling self-conscious about your skills at work or elsewhere, take some time to remember how far you\u2019ve come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you like to draw, there will be times when you\u2019re not satisfied with something you\u2019ve created\u2014but if you compare that drawing to something you made when you were just starting out, you\u2019ll realize just how skilled an artist you\u2019ve become since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Also, further improving your skills will give you a sense of hope. <\/strong>This is because, even if a situation isn\u2019t what you want it to be, you\u2019ll know that you can improve yourself and eventually change that situation. For instance, if you\u2019re passed over for a promotion at work, you\u2019ll know that you can redouble your efforts and get promoted next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Boost Your Skills With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/effective-learning\/\">Effective Learning<\/a><\/strong><br><br>One way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/improve-your-skills\/\">improve your skills<\/a> is to study. For example, if you want to improve your drawing skills, you could teach yourself new techniques to get the results you want as well as to learn mistakes and pitfalls to avoid. You might do this by studying art theory and the work of other artists.&nbsp;<br><br>Therefore, your skills in any area will improve more quickly if you start by learning effective <em>study <\/em>skills\u2014and, as a result, you\u2019ll quickly develop feelings of empowerment and hope. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/limitless\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Limitless<\/em><\/a>, educator and \u201cbrain coach\u201d Jim Kwik presents a learning model that he says will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/limitless\/1-page-summary#we-must-learn-how-to-learn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">make it possible for anyone to learn anything<\/a>. The <em>Limitless <\/em>model has three components:&nbsp;<br><br><strong>1. Mindframe: <\/strong>You must truly believe in your limitless potential and must be open-minded about new information. In other words, you must know that you\u2019re <em>able <\/em>to learn, and you must be <em>ready <\/em>to learn.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>2. Drive: <\/strong>You must find ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-inspire-yourself\/\">motivate yourself<\/a> to learn about whatever topic you\u2019re studying. This is crucial because even someone who knows they <em>can <\/em>learn anything still <em>won\u2019t <\/em>learn about subjects they\u2019re not interested in. The suggestions from our section on the first source of good feelings (fun) can help with this\u2014you\u2019ll be more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-motivate-yourself-to-learn\/\">motivated to learn<\/a> if the learning is enjoyable.<br><br><strong>3. Techniques: <\/strong>You use specific practices to quickly absorb and retain new information. For example, Kwik suggests that you try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/limitless\/1-page-summary#train-your-memory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visualizing what you\u2019re learning about<\/a>, instead of just trying to memorize the words on a page.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-take-responsibility-for-everything\">3. Take Responsibility for Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abdaal\u2019s third suggestion is to take responsibility for everything you do. <\/strong>Though it seems counterintuitive, accepting the consequences of your decisions and your actions is a major part of feeling like you\u2019re in control of your life. That\u2019s because, when you take accountability, you understand that what you do really matters. On the other hand, if you <em>avoid <\/em>accountability, then it will feel like your actions have no effect on you\u2014in other words, it will seem like you have no control over your own life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The author adds that <strong>even when you can\u2019t choose your tasks or goals<\/strong> (a common situation in the workplace, for instance) <strong>you still have control over your mindset and actions.<\/strong> That means it\u2019s up to you whether you want to complain and do a halfhearted job, or to give each task your all even if it\u2019s not what you want to be doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Counterpoint: You\u2019re Always Accountable for What You Do<\/strong>Abdaal discusses the benefits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/accepting-responsibility\/\">taking responsibility<\/a> as opposed to avoiding it, but some other self-help experts say that it\u2019s impossible <em>not <\/em>to take responsibility for what you do. From that perspective, self-empowerment isn\u2019t about taking accountability, but rather about recognizing that you already are accountable.<br><br>Mark Manson makes this case in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-subtle-art-of-not-giving-a-f-ck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck<\/em><\/a>. Manson argues that you always have choices to make, no matter what situation you\u2019re in, and you must therefore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-subtle-art-of-not-giving-a-f-ck\/chapter-5#youre-always-making-choices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hold yourself accountable for those choices<\/a>. What actions you take\u2014and what personal values you base those actions on\u2014are completely up to you, no matter what external pressures you might be facing.<br><br>Consider the previous example of an employee who can\u2019t choose their own tasks and goals at work: If their employer tells them to do something unethical or illegal, that employee still gets to decide how they\u2019ll respond. For instance, the employee could do as they\u2019re told, they could refuse, or they could report the company\u2019s behavior to the authorities.
