Learning how to be present in the moment allows you to experience your life more richly and be more intentional with how you use your time and energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obsessing over self-improvement makes it hard to live in the present: When you\u2019re constantly analyzing the past, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-worrying-about-the-future\/\">worrying about the future<\/a>, or going through your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/gtd-to-do-list\/\">to-do list<\/a> in your head, you scatter yourself in too many directions instead of focusing on what matters to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: This principle of living fully in the present moment is similar to the concept of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/eckhart-tolle-meditation-mindfulness\/\">mindfulness<\/a><\/em>. According to Buddhist monk Bhante Gunaratana in <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/mindfulness-in-plain-english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Mindfulness in Plain English<\/em><\/a>, mindfulness is the key to finding long-lasting peace and satisfaction with your life. To practice mindfulness as he describes it, when you focus on the present, you also practice <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/mindfulness-in-plain-english\/chapter-13-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detachment<\/a>: You observe things as they are without attaching concepts, ideas, or emotions to them. This is important because a major source of our unhappiness is our tendency to <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/mindfulness-in-plain-english\/chapter-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">categorize experiences as good, bad, or neutral<\/a>\u2014something we may naturally do when we pursue self-improvement.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some ways to redirect your attention to the present:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-schedule-focus-time\">Schedule Focus Time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s digital age, it\u2019s easy to get distracted, but it\u2019s also impractical to forbid yourself from ever multitasking or checking your devices. Thus, you should schedule periods of time throughout your day to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/living-in-the-present-moment\/\">be fully present<\/a>. By scheduling focus time, you can be more purposeful and focus on what\u2019s important to you. When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-schedule-your-day-2\/\">planning your day<\/a>, set aside chunks of time to focus entirely on the task at hand\u2014whether it\u2019s a work project or quality time with family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can help yourself focus by removing potential distractions in advance. Find places to put away devices and other things that might divert your attention from the task you want to focus on. Having distractions around will test your willpower and make it hard for you to focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-decide-what-you-shouldn-t-do\">Decide What You <em>Shouldn\u2019t<\/em> Do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to scheduling what you need to do, it\u2019s equally important to make a list of what you should <em>not<\/em> do. To-do lists can actually be counterproductive by making you feel obligated to perform useless tasks. To be more intentional with your time, reflect on what you spend your time on and cut any task that doesn\u2019t align with your goals and values. This way, you can dedicate your full attention and energy to what matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Additional Tips for Managing Your Focus and Attention<\/strong><br><br>In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/hyperfocus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Hyperfocus<\/em><\/a>, Chris Bailey agrees on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/importance-of-focus-in-life\/\">importance of focus<\/a> and provides additional tips for scheduling focus time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/remove-distractions\/\">eliminating distractions<\/a>, and managing your tasks:<br><br><strong>Scheduling focus time: <\/strong>In addition to <em>making<\/em> time to focus, Bailey suggests you <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/hyperfocus\/chapter-3#when-to-hyperfocus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strategically decide <em>when <\/em>to focus<\/a>. Schedule focus sessions for when you have the most energy (which you can determine by recording your energy levels for a few weeks). If needed, you can use caffeine to increase your focus just before starting your task or activity.<br><br><strong>Eliminating distractions: <\/strong>Bailey argues that we\u2019re biologically driven to distraction, which is why it\u2019s important to preempt distractions. We have a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/hyperfocus\/chapter-4-1#why-were-so-easily-distracted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">novelty bias<\/a>,\u201d which means we get drawn to new things. On the neurochemical level, our brains release dopamine (a feel-good chemical) wherever we pivot to a new task or distraction. This motivates us to continue multitasking or giving in to distractions. To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-manage-distractions\/\">manage distractions<\/a>, Bailey advises closing your email client, deleting or blocking access to apps, and disabling notifications.<br><br><strong>Deciding the tasks you shouldn\u2019t do:<\/strong> Bailey suggests you decide which tasks to cut by reflecting first on the different tasks you currently spend your time doing. Create an attention matrix by <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/hyperfocus\/chapter-2#the-four-categories-of-tasks-baileys-attention-management-matrix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sorting your tasks into four categories<\/a>: unnecessary, distracting, necessary, and meaningful.
