Streisand got her first acting credits at the age of 15 as an apprentice at Malden Bridge Playhouse. Her first role was a small part in a play called <em>Teahouse of the August Moon<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: The factual details of Streisand\u2019s career are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000659\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">readily available<\/a>. Therefore, we focus mainly on what she says about her personal experiences as a performer rather than reiterating all of the specific roles she played.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same summer, Streisand played a flirtatious office worker and a plain, bookish girl; though those roles were very different from each other, she received positive reviews for both. This is when actors are repeatedly cast in the same kind of role, such as how John Wayne played numerous versions of <a href=\"https:\/\/movieweb.com\/most-typecast-actors\/#john-wayne:~:text=come%20to%20mind.-,John%20Wayne,-MGM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a rugged, manly cowboy<\/a>. Many actors fear being typecast because having to play the same kind of character over and over can feel like it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityheadshots.com\/blog\/type-casting-acting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suffocating their creativity<\/a>.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the support of her manager Martin \u201cMarty\u201d Erlichman, <strong>Streisand landed her first Broadway role at the age of 19: <\/strong>a young secretary named Miss Marmelstein in the play <em>I Can Get It for You Wholesale<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: According to Jerome Weidman, who wrote <em>Wholesale<\/em>, the unusual choice to cast 19-year-old Streisand as middle-aged secretary Miss Marmelstein was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barbra-archives.info\/i-can-get-it-for-you-wholesale#:~:text=Casting%20Barbra%20as%20Miss%20Marmelstein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made out of necessity<\/a>. Streisand was such an exceptional performer that they absolutely had to cast her, but she had such a big personality and presence that she\u2019d steal scenes if she were only in the ensemble, thereby ruining the show. Therefore, casting her as Marmelstein\u2014a major character, but not a <em>main <\/em>character\u2014gave her a chance to shine onstage while still allowing more experienced performers to play the leading roles.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1964, Streisand starred in <em>Funny Girl <\/em>as legendary vaudeville performer Fanny Brice. She adds that she was competing with some of the biggest names of the day for that part, including Carol Burnett and Anne Bancroft; being cast over such popular stars was proof of Streisand\u2019s stardom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Although she\u2019d been competing with some of the most popular performers on Broadway, some reviews of <em>Funny Girl <\/em>made it seem as though casting Streisand was <a href=\"http:\/\/barbra-archives.com\/bjs_library\/60s\/64_funny_girl_review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a foregone conclusion<\/a>.
