Studies have shown that most Americans are ignorant of pesticides\u2019 ability to poison or cause disease, even as they use them in their homes and gardens\u2014resulting in hospitalizations when people inadvertently contaminate their own water supply or fill an enclosed room with deadly chemicals. Local agriculture departments often downplay or outright lie about the dangers of spraying campaigns carried out over residential areas, and some have been sued after the fact by farmers whose product was destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Such lawsuits continue to this day, though they tend to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-07-13\/california-lawsuits-says-pesticide-caused-kids-brain-damage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">target private chemical companies<\/a> who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/feb\/20\/firms-making-billions-from-highly-hazardous-pesticides-analysis-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sell pesticides for personal or commercial use<\/a> rather than government agencies. That said, the EPA\u2014established in 1970 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/history\/origins-epa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in part to regulate pesticides<\/a> and protect public health\u2014has also <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/03\/22\/paraquat-the-deadliest-chemical-in-us-agriculture-goes-on-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">been sued several times<\/a> over claims that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/jun\/10\/epa-pesticide-toxic-seeds-lawsuit-environment-pollution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">failed to restrict the sale of harmful chemicals<\/a>. As of the 2020s, the EPA is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/pressured-lawsuits-epa-toughens-pesticide-rules-protect-endangered-species\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working to speed up its evaluation process<\/a> to more quickly ban potentially dangerous herbicides. Public education about the dangers of pesticides has improved since Carson\u2019s day, in part due to EPA-sponsored initiatives like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pesticide-worker-safety\/pesticide-safety-education-programs-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">university Pesticide Safety Education Programs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-expands-pesticide-outreach-and-education-better-meet-needs-pesticide-applicators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Pesticide Safety Education Month<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since chemical companies have no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-incentive-meaning-and-definition-economics\/\">incentive<\/a> to warn about the dangers of their products, Carson believes that <strong>the best solution is more pesticide regulation and government oversight<\/strong>. The Food and Drug Administration is intended to protect public health by regulating commercial products, but their ability to control the spread of pesticides is limited by the small number of employees and the fact that many sprays are permitted to go to market even as they\u2019re still being tested for carcinogenic or otherwise harmful effects. Carson argues that the department\u2019s reach should be expanded, including allowing it to ban some pesticides outright, and that the federal government should do more to educate people about the uses and dangers of pesticides.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Government Regulation Under the EPA<\/strong><br><br>Carson herself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/stories\/story-silent-spring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worked for a government regulatory agency<\/a> under the US Fish and Wildlife Service, which is housed in the Department of the Interior and responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/history-of-fws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enforcing federal laws protecting wildlife and conserving wildlife habitats<\/a> across the US. When the EPA was founded in 1970\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2158244013494861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arguably as a direct result of <em>Silent Spring<\/em><\/a> and the growing environmentalist movement\u2014it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/archive\/epa\/aboutepa\/reorganization-plan-no-3-1970.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">took over several duties that had previously been shared<\/a> by the Department of the Interior, the Department of Agriculture, and the Food and Drug Administration, including the regulation of pesticides and pollution control programs.&nbsp;<br><br>A series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/importance-of-environmental-protection\/\">environmental protection<\/a> laws passed in the \u201970s would expand the reach of the EPA, including <a href=\"https:\/\/crsreports.congress.gov\/product\/pdf\/RL\/RL30853\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revisions to the 1963 Clean Air Act<\/a> (which allowed the EPA to regulate vehicle emissions), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/enforcement\/federal-insecticide-fungicide-and-rodenticide-act-fifra-and-federal-facilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revisions to the 1947 Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act<\/a> (regulation of the manufacture and sale of pesticides), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/drinking\/public\/regulations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1974 Safe Drinking Water Act<\/a> (regulation of water quality standards), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/laws-regulations\/summary-resource-conservation-and-recovery-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1976 Resource Conservation and Recovery Act<\/a> (regulation of waste disposal). The powers of the Fish and Wildlife Services were also expanded with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/national\/endangered-species-conservation\/endangered-species-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1973 Endangered Species Act<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s the current status of pesticide regulation?
