Did he get it right, according to real science?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Victorian scientist builds a machine that can travel through time. <em>The Time Machine<\/em>, first published in 1895, is one of the earliest known science fiction stories. This literary classic by English author H.G. Wells popularized the concept of time travel and introduced the now-common phrase \u201ctime machine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more to learn how the book explains that time is the fourth dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-time-is-the-fourth-dimension\">Time Is the Fourth Dimension<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Time Machine <\/em>begins with the Time Traveller explaining to a group of his friends (including the narrator) that time travel is possible. This is because time is a dimension just like length, width, and height. So, because time is the fourth dimension, people should be able to move through time just as they can move through the other three dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prove this, the Time Traveller says that nothing could be only three-dimensional because an object that exists for zero time doesn\u2019t exist at all.<strong> <\/strong>He illustrates the point by comparing it to the fact that no object can truly be two-dimensional\u2014anything that exists must have <em>some <\/em>height, even if it\u2019s as thin as a sheet of paper. <strong>Therefore, all objects actually exist in four dimensions (length, width, height, and time).&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: <em>The Time Machine <\/em>is fiction, but it\u2019s true that physicists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/startswithabang\/2019\/08\/27\/this-is-why-time-has-to-be-a-dimension\/?sh=70c3843a3646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consider time to be the fourth dimension<\/a>, although the reasoning is somewhat different than what Wells wrote. Time must be a dimension because, in order to fully explain where an object or an event is, you also have to specify <em>when <\/em>it\u2019s at that location. For example, if someone asks you where you are, the time is implied\u2014\u201dWhere are you right now?\u201d<em> <\/em>Without such a timeframe, the question (and the answer) would be meaningless; you could answer with any location you\u2019ve ever been or ever will be. With that said, time <em>is <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/startswithabang\/2020\/08\/12\/a-spacetime-surprise-time-isnt-just-another-dimension\/?sh=74d645547dc8#:~:text=There%20are%20two%20ways%20that%20time%2C%20as%20a%20dimension%2C%20is%20different%20from%20space.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fundamentally different from the other three dimensions<\/a>, and we <a href=\"https:\/\/web.mit.edu\/bskow\/www\/research\/temporality.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can\u2019t interact with it in the same ways<\/a>.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Time Traveller then announces that he\u2019s created a machine that can move freely through the fourth dimension,<\/strong> which he shows to his disbelieving guests. After a short demonstration involving a miniature version of the time machine, the guests go home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Are time machines possible? Researchers have <a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/time-machine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">designed time machines<\/a> that, hypothetically, would allow people to move along the fourth dimension as the Time Traveller claims. However, those designs require either negative mass (which doesn\u2019t exist) or negative energy\u2014which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/26058563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exists<\/a> but without a way to harness it. One such machine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andersoninstitute.com\/tipler-cylinder.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is actually possible to build<\/a> but making it work would require more energy than there is in the entire universe.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One week later, the guests return to the Time Traveller\u2019s house for a dinner party. The Time Traveller isn\u2019t there, but the guests find a note saying to start eating. The group is in the middle of their meal when the Time Traveller returns; the guests are shocked to see that he\u2019s filthy and limping. After dinner, the Time Traveller tells them what he experienced when he traveled through time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: We learn that most of <em>The Time Machine <\/em>is actually a secondhand account of the Time Traveller\u2019s journey\u2014the Time Traveller told a story to his guests, and one of those guests is now telling that story to the reader. This raises the possibility of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterclass.com\/articles\/what-is-an-unreliable-narrator-4-ways-to-create-an-unreliable-narrator-in-writing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unreliable narrator<\/a>\u2014someone who, intentionally or not, misleads the audience. In this case, for instance, the Time Traveller might have embellished his story or the narrator may have misremembered some details of it.
