Louis and the other officers shoveled and hauled coal day in and day out, with one estimate suggesting that each man hauled around four tons of coal a day. The guards pushed them to move faster and faster, and often the whole day would go by without food or the ability to stand up straight<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, Louis was hauling coal up a railcar ramp when a guard elbowed him in the side.
