These employees <strong>experience significantly higher rates of poor mental health, feel less valued, and intend to quit their jobs<\/strong> at nearly double the rate of workers without AI fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-background\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sandervantnoordende\/2023\/10\/20\/how-to-bridge-the-ai-anxiety-gap-at-workand-seize-the-job-opportunities\/?sh=68ab2cf1c86a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI evokes excitement<\/a> for some, <strong>for many, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2023\/09\/artificial-intelligence-poor-mental-health#:~:text=Nearly%20two%2Dthirds%20(64%25),AI%2C%20according%20to%20the%20survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>uncertainty prevails<\/strong><\/a><strong> about how the rapidly expanding technology will transform their work lives.<\/strong> AI is already embedded in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eiu.com\/n\/how-companies-use-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">everyday business functions<\/a> across a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sandervantnoordende\/2023\/10\/20\/how-to-bridge-the-ai-anxiety-gap-at-workand-seize-the-job-opportunities\/?sh=68ab2cf1c86a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">variety of sectors<\/a>, and experts say more companies will implement AI in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychologists say that many workers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2023\/09\/artificial-intelligence-poor-mental-health#:~:text=Nearly%20two%2Dthirds%20(64%25),AI%2C%20according%20to%20the%20survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fear AI will assume roles traditionally reserved for humans<\/a>, like content generation and customer interactions, and will devalue their creativity and interpersonal skills. <strong>The perceived lack of control over such seismic changes can trigger feelings of helplessness and threaten people\u2019s identities<\/strong>, as skills that took years to develop are potentially rendered obsolete overnight, raising questions about what roles will be left for humans.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Could AI Replace Laborers?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, robots could only do things they were specifically programmed to do by humans. Because designing and programming a robot for any given task requires a significant up-front investment, automation was only practical for well-defined repetitive tasks, such as assembly line work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But large-language-model (LLM) AIs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-can-you-do-with-chatgpt\/\">ChatGPT<\/a> provide two capabilities that, when used together, change the situation: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/871367\/surprising-uses-for-chatgpt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">They can interpret natural language, and they can write computer code.<\/a> This means it is now possible to build a robot that can respond to commands it wasn\u2019t pre-programmed for. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepmind.com\/blog\/rt-2-new-model-translates-vision-and-language-into-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI interprets the command and writes computer code to move the robot accordingly<\/a>. Then it runs the code and the robot executes the command. General-purpose robots like this could, at least in theory, be substituted for human workers in sectors like retail, food service, manual labor, construction, and other skilled trades.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, if someone creates a humanoid robot with physical capabilities that lag behind human workers by only as much as LLMs lag behind human authors, <strong>the robot might be in a better position to take over the manual labor market than LLMs are to displace human authors.<\/strong> This is because vocations like writing tend to disproportionately favor exceptional quality (a few exceptional authors become rich and famous; most writers don\u2019t), but the market for physical labor doesn\u2019t: An exceptionally talented warehouse worker doesn\u2019t earn much more than an average warehouse worker (at least not until she gets promoted up the management chain, at which point she is no longer doing manual labor).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/article\/why-its-hard-to-find-a-mechanic-or-carpenter-shortform-explainers-shortform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the current shortage of labor in the skilled trades<\/a> continues long enough, robots might provide a solution to the shortage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-worried-workforce\"><strong>A Worried Workforce<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the implementation of AI picks up steam in US workplaces large and small, many workers worry about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20230418-ai-anxiety-artificial-intelligence-replace-jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pace and impacts of the change<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/issues\/workforce\/hopes-and-fears-2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 PwC survey<\/a> of 52,000 workers, 30% of respondents feared that AI would replace them in just three years.<\/li><li>A 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/pubs\/reports\/work-in-america\/2023-work-america-ai-monitoring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">APA survey<\/a> of 2,515 US workers revealed that 38% worried AI could render some or all of their job responsibilities obsolete in the future.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The APA study found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2023\/09\/artificial-intelligence-poor-mental-health#:~:text=Nearly%20two%2Dthirds%20(64%25),AI%2C%20according%20to%20the%20survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">certain populations<\/a> are more anxious about AI taking their jobs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Workers with a high school education or less were more worried than those with a four-year college degree (44% vs. 34%).<\/li><li>Black (50%), Hispanic (46%), and Asian (44%) workers were more concerned than white respondents (34%).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/ai-anxiety-is-on-the-rise-heres-how-to-manage-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creatives<\/a> are also deeply concerned about the impacts of AI, afraid that it will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reduce artists\u2019 incomes and job prospects by being trained on, plagiarizing, and profiting off of artists\u2019 creations to generate ostensibly original work.<\/li><li>Jeopardize the future of art by devaluing artists\u2019 skills and unique voices.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychologists say that <strong>employers should be concerned about workers\u2019 AI-related anxiety<\/strong>.&nbsp; Of APA survey respondents who were worried about AI:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Two out of five (41%) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2023\/09\/artificial-intelligence-poor-mental-health#:~:text=Nearly%20two%2Dthirds%20(64%25),AI%2C%20according%20to%20the%20survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">believed their employer didn\u2019t care about them<\/a> (vs. 23% without AI anxiety).&nbsp;<\/li><li>66% believed their employer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/pubs\/reports\/work-in-america\/2023-work-america-ai-monitoring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overestimated workplace well-being<\/a> (vs. 48% without AI anxiety).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Workers who don\u2019t feel valued can experience burnout symptoms.
