Retaining your current employees by offering them benefits is more effective than replacing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out the reasons why it&#8217;s better to offer more benefits than replace employees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-supply-generous-benefits\"><strong>Supply Generous Benefits<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The first reason that explains the importance of employee benefits is that high employee turnover is expensive for your company.<\/strong> Second, every time you hire someone new, your team has to divert time and attention away from serving your customers to conduct interviews and get the new employees up to speed (a long, arduous process).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Some business experts argue that the high cost of employee turnover is a worthwhile expense. In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/no-rules-rules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>No Rules Rules<\/em><\/a>, Reed Hastings reveals that Netflix encourages its managers to <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/no-rules-rules\/chapter-2#fire-any-employee-you-wouldnt-fight-to-keep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fire any employee they wouldn\u2019t actively fight to keep<\/a>. Their rationale is that if everyone in the company is an elite-level performer, it <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/no-rules-rules\/part-1#lesson-2-high-performers-thrive-among-other-high-performers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">motivates the entire organization to maintain high standards<\/a>. Netflix seeks to soften the blow of frequent firings by <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/no-rules-rules\/chapter-2#create-a-fast-firing-process-and-provide-a-generous-severance-package\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">providing generous severance packages<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many companies entice employees with benefits that seem generous but that incentivize them to spend too much time at work instead of cultivating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/finding-balance-between-work-and-life\/\">work-life balance<\/a>. For example, they deck out the office with ping-pong tables or on-campus workout facilities that are free for employees to use but encourage them to stay at the workplace instead of going home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, <strong>Fried and Hansson recommend offering employees generous benefits that genuinely support employees\u2014especially their lives outside of work.<\/strong> For instance, Fried and Hansson pay for their employees to take three weeks of vacation every year and even cover the costs of travel and accommodation for their workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Counterpoint: Excessive Employee Benefits Are Demotivating<\/strong><br><br>In contrast to Fried and Hansson, Daniel H. Pink argues in <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/drive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Drive<\/em><\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/drive\/chapter-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">excessive employee benefits of <em>any<\/em> kind will <em>demotivate<\/em> workers<\/a>.&nbsp;Pink asserts that any sources of <em>external motivation<\/em> (like employee benefits) reduce employees\u2019 subjective sense of autonomy by making them feel like the work is something they <em>have<\/em> to do to get more rewards. This makes the job itself less appealing and consequently demotivates workers. Instead, Pink recommends fostering your employees\u2019 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-intrinsic-motivation\/\">internal motivation<\/a> <\/em>by giving them more autonomy at work\u2014for instance, by <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/drive\/chapter-7#improving-intrinsic-motivation-in-your-organization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letting them work on projects of their own devising<\/a> for 20% of their time at work.<br><br>However, this doesn\u2019t mean that businesses should scrap all employee benefits. Pink explains that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/drive\/chapter-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">workers need a certain baseline of external incentives<\/a> to feel motivated; otherwise, they\u2019ll be demoralized by how unfair their situation is. For instance, employees in many industries expect a certain amount of paid vacation.
