If you like what you read here, there\u2019s plenty more to check out in the guide!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-voice-in-a-story\">Voice in a Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One component of a great story is <em>the storyteller\u2019s unique voice. <\/em>In his book <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/unleash-the-power-of-storytelling\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Unleash the Power of Storytelling<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> Rob Biesenbach contends that, in addition to telling your audience something about <em>themselves<\/em>, a good story <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/unleash-the-power-of-storytelling\/1-page-summary#what-makes-a-story-engaging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tells them something about <em>you<\/em><\/a>. By revealing something about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/your-genius\/\">who you are<\/a>, the right story humanizes you. Your voice in a story illustrates how you see the world, communicates how you\u2019re unique, and makes you memorable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/on-writing-well\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>On Writing Well<\/em><\/a>, nonfiction writer William Zinsser contends that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/on-writing-well\/part-1-3#what-is-identity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">identity is a writer\u2019s most recognizable quality<\/a>. If someone likes your identity and the way you tell stories, they\u2019ll seek out more of your stories because they\u2019re interested in what you have to say and how you say it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To develop your unique style, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/on-writing-well\/part-1-3#write-for-yourself\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>start by writing for yourself<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Zinsser explains that your identity will shine through when you write about things that <em>you<\/em> want to write about. Or, ask yourself what <em>you<\/em> want to read, and write about that. By letting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-are-you-curious-about\/\">your interests<\/a> direct your writing topic, you\u2019ll be more passionate when writing about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-practice\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Practice<\/em><\/a>, nonfiction writer Seth Godin offers a caveat to this advice: Sharing your unique voice <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-practice\/1-page-summary#use-your-unique-voice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doesn\u2019t always mean sharing your \u201cauthentic\u201d voice<\/a>. There\u2019s a common misconception that successful artists should strive for authenticity by sharing their innermost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/thoughts-feelings-and-behaviors\/\">thoughts and feelings<\/a>. But, Godin points out that very few things are truly authentic\u2014almost everything we do is the result of a series of intentional choices. Godin advises you to <strong>create art in such a way that the audience has what <em>feels<\/em> like an authentic experience<\/strong>\u2014which doesn\u2019t necessarily involve using your authentic voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you wanted to write an effective personal essay, you wouldn\u2019t just tear a page out of your journal that contains unfiltered, authentic thoughts. You\u2019d need to make choices about the structure of your essay, the dialogue, and the characters. You\u2019d need to decide which of your inner thoughts the audience needs to know and which don\u2019t serve the story. <strong>While your writing voice certainly isn\u2019t \u201cfake,\u201d it\u2019s also not an exact match for the voice you use in everyday life.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does it mean to infuse your stories with your unique voice?
