In his book <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/on-writing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>On Writing<\/em><\/a>, Stephen King believes that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/on-writing\/the-elements-of-a-story#themes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all good writing has a theme<\/a>. Themes focus the story, making it feel more unified and coherent. A theme is also inspiring to the writer\u2014it makes the work feel meaningful and worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>King has some advice on how to write the theme of a story that might surprise you. He contends that the theme shouldn\u2019t be premeditated. He recommends that you start with the story and discover the theme as you go along. Forcing your story to adhere to a certain theme as you write will make it feel artificial and less true to life. Themes often come from your personal interests\u2014what you like musing about. King has his own, which become recurring themes in his works: the allure of technology and its inevitable problems (<em>The Stand<\/em>, <em>The Tommyknockers<\/em>), why bad things happen to good people (<em>The Shining<\/em>, <em>The Dark Half<\/em>), and the blurring of reality and fantasy (<em>Bag of Bones<\/em>, <em>The Dark Half<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, the themes you\u2019re personally interested in will also be interesting to others. According to Rob Biesenbach in his book <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/unleash-the-power-of-storytelling\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Unleash the Power of Storytelling<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> the most effective themes <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/unleash-the-power-of-storytelling\/1-page-summary#what-makes-a-story-engaging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">involve values you share with your audience<\/a>. For example, a story about how a neighborhood banded together to replant a vegetable garden that was washed out in a storm will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/appeal-to-the-audience\/\">appeal to an audience<\/a> that values collaboration, resilience, and mutual aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-theme-manifests-through-internal-change\">Theme Manifests Through Internal Change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some experts note that <strong>a story\u2019s theme is often conveyed through <em>internal change<\/em><\/strong>.<strong> <\/strong>In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/wired-for-story\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Wired for Story<\/em><\/a>, Lisa Cron contends that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/wired-for-story\/1-page-summary#the-elements-of-a-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">any story is <em>truly<\/em> about how the protagonist changes<\/a> as a result of the story\u2019s events. She adds that the plot is the external events of the narrative, while the story is <em>about<\/em> the protagonist\u2019s internal reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most meaningful stories in history all revolve around a protagonist\u2019s internal change, according to mythology expert Joseph Campbell. In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-hero-with-a-thousand-faces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Hero With a Thousand Faces<\/em><\/a>, Campbell asserts that cultures around the world all draw on the same essential mythological template: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-the-heros-journey\/\">hero\u2019s journey<\/a>. <strong>The hero\u2019s journey <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-hero-with-a-thousand-faces\/introduction#the-mythological-template\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>is all about transformation<\/strong><\/a>\u2014the hero goes on a quest and returns having changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, for a change in your protagonist\u2019s life to be meaningful, Robert McKee argues in his book <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/story\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Story<\/em><\/a> that <strong>the change must occur <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/story\/1-page-summary#ingredient-3-positive-or-negative-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>because of your protagonist\u2019s actions<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. A few random events that change your character\u2019s life are fine to include in your story, but they don\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-create-meaning-in-life\/\">create meaning<\/a> on their own.
