According to psychotherapist and mother Philippa Perry, your self-talk has a big impact on your child\u2019s relationship with themself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to understand the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/benefits-of-positive-self-talk\/\">importance of positive self-talk<\/a> for both you and your kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-importance-of-positive-self-talk\">The Importance of Positive Self-Talk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read<\/em>, Perry discusses the importance of positive self-talk and provides concrete advice to help you put it into practice.  She points out that children model their behavior on the behavior of their parents. So, if you tend to speak negatively to and about yourself, your child will likely develop that behavior as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, say you have an inner belief that you\u2019re not very smart. Even if it\u2019s not true, it makes you feel deeply insecure. Therefore, anytime someone compliments you for your cleverness or skills, you make a self-deprecating comment diminishing your intelligence. Likewise, anytime you make a mistake, you take it as evidence that confirms your self-assessment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t treat or think of your child the same way, so you don\u2019t think about how your comments about yourself affect them. However, over time, you might notice they stop trying very hard in school, they\u2019re afraid to make mistakes, or they frequently minimize their intelligence. By watching you put yourself down, they\u2019ve learned to do the same.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Some psychologists assert that you should <a href=\"https:\/\/forge.medium.com\/why-you-shouldnt-criticize-yourself-in-front-of-your-kids-61a651bd864c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">think of your child as if they\u2019re an alien<\/a> observing and cataloging everything that you do. When your child arrives in this world, they (like an alien) have no inherent understanding of language or social customs\u2014they learn it all from you. They learn how to fit in by imitating the behaviors they see in you because that\u2019s what they perceive as normal. This includes negative self-relationships.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-putting-it-into-practice-address-negative-self-talk\">Putting It Into Practice: Address Negative Self-Talk<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To set your child up to have a positive self-relationship, you must address the negative ways you treat and speak to and about yourself. Perry states that the first step is to recognize your patterns of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/stop-negative-self-talk\/\">negative self-talk<\/a>. These patterns often go unnoticed because they\u2019re embedded in your self-image, so it\u2019s important to consciously identify them. Start by writing down every negative thought you have about yourself for a day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve identified a negative thought, don\u2019t try to reason with it\u2014engaging with it will take up too much of your energy and be unproductive. Instead, acknowledge the thought and pretend it\u2019s an uncomfortable comment made by a person whose opinion you disagree with. Remind yourself that they can share their opinion, but you don\u2019t have to listen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: One way to take power from your inner critical voice is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/negative-self-talk-and-how-it-affects-us-4161304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">give it a name as if it\u2019s a person.<\/a> This will help you visualize it as something outside of yourself, as Perry suggests. Additionally, ascribing a silly name to it will make it seem less threatening, making the thoughts seem silly as well.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, prove the thought wrong by doing something it claims you can\u2019t do. By doing the thing that feels impossible, you build your confidence and create evidence to look back on when you begin to question yourself again. For instance, returning to our previous example, you might start working on the book you\u2019ve always wanted to write despite the negative thoughts that tell you you\u2019re not smart enough to be an author.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: You can also collect evidence against negative thoughts by moving your attention away from them and toward positive things you\u2019re already doing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/anxiety-files\/201710\/are-you-your-own-worst-enemy#:~:text=5.%20Replace%20self%2Dcriticism%20with%20self%2Dreward.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Praise yourself for five things you do well a day,<\/a> whether for simply getting out of bed, exercising, having a nice conversation, and so on. Praising yourself consistently will help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/reframe-your-thoughts\/\">reframe your thoughts<\/a> away from constant criticism.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Examples of Common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/negative-thinking-patterns\/\">Negative Thought Patterns<\/a><\/strong><br><br>Negative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-break-negative-thought-patterns\/\">thought patterns<\/a> can be difficult to recognize since they\u2019re so automatic. Look for these common patterns, and write them down any time you observe one in your thoughts:<br><br><strong>Overgeneralizing.<\/strong> This is when, in response to a situation, you think that something bad <em>always<\/em> happens to you or something <em>good<\/em> never happens to you. These thoughts contribute to a defeatist mindset that precludes positive change.<br><br><strong>Ignoring positive experiences.<\/strong> This leads you to always feel inadequate or underappreciated since you can never recognize when something is going well for you.<br><br><strong>All-or-nothing perspective.<\/strong> In this thought pattern, you see everything in extremes. If something isn\u2019t perfect, then it\u2019s a failure.<br><br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/jumping-to-conclusions-psychology\/\">Jumping to conclusions<\/a>.<\/strong> This is when you have a negative thought or a feeling and you form a conclusion based on it, even if there\u2019s no evidence to support it.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you talk to and about yourself?
