Walter Isaacson explains that, though Musk considered pursuing a Ph.D. after graduating college in 1995, he worried he might miss the rising Internet boom and decided to go into business instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With $40,000 in financial support from his parents, Musk and his brother Kimbal designed an online business database which they merged with mapping software, creating the first program where users could look up a business\u2019s address and see it displayed on a map. Dubbed \u201cZip2,\u201d their company consisted of a small team of engineers whom Musk drove hard to work long hours, setting an example by also driving himself nearly to the point of exhaustion. In 1999, Compaq bought Zip2 for $300 million, planting the seed of Musk\u2019s next fortune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: 1995 was a bumper year for the internet and the computer industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tech-insider.org\/statistics\/research\/1996\/0126.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The global market for personal computers had grown by 25%<\/a>, with Compaq and IBM in the lead. Microsoft released its landmark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/21398999\/windows-95-anniversary-release-date-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Windows 95<\/a> operating system, as well as the first version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infoworld.com\/article\/2972589\/up-down-out-20-years-microsoft-internet-explorer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Internet Explorer<\/a>. Intel released its groundbreaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pctechguide.com\/pentium-cpus\/pentium-pro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pentium Pro<\/a> central processing unit, and several new scripting languages made their debut, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerhope.com\/jargon\/j\/java.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Java<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerhope.com\/jargon\/j\/javascript.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Javascript<\/a>, PHP, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerhope.com\/jargon\/m\/mysql.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MySQL<\/a>. That year also saw the debut of the first fully computer-generated motion picture, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Entertainment\/toy-story-turns-20-changed-animated-films-forever\/story?id=35281890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Toy Story<\/em><\/a>. Musk was correct to sense that the time was ripe for computer innovation.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk\u2019s next goal was to start an online bank, which he launched as X.com. Musk and his rival, PayPal, flourished because the auction site eBay created the need for online payment platforms. However, X.com and PayPal both suffered during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/dot-com-bubble-burst\/\">dot-com crash<\/a>, and Isaacson writes that, to avoid a war of attrition, <strong>Musk and PayPal\u2019s founders merged their companies into one bank<\/strong> that was X.com at its core, operating under the PayPal name. However, because Musk ignored warnings that PayPal was being used as a platform for financial fraud, the board removed Musk from his position of power. He still benefited to the tune of $250 million when eBay bought PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Before Musk\u2019s involvement, PayPal grew out of a product created by the Internet startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/confinity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Confinity<\/a> which was designed to facilitate payments on <a href=\"https:\/\/history-computer.com\/palm-pilot-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Palm Pilots<\/a>, the precursor to modern-day smartphones. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/The-Founders\/Jimmy-Soni\/9781501197260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Founders<\/em><\/a>, Jimmy Soni explains that Confinity originated the concepts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/d\/digital-wallet.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital wallets<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/e\/email-money-transfer.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">email money transfers<\/a>, while Musk\u2019s X.com focused on building a more general-purpose online bank.
