David explains that <strong>people instinctively believe these narratives are true because they\u2019re informed by <em>emotions<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em>which we\u2019re wired to pay attention to. This is the case even when the narratives aren&#8217;t true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mindfulness of emotions can help you avoid being taken in by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/false-narratives\/\">false narratives<\/a>. Mindfulness is the act of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-pay-attention\/\">paying attention<\/a> to your senses, emotions, and surroundings without judgment.<\/strong> David suggests that, by paying attention to the stimuli in your surroundings\u2014and the emotions that arise from your thoughts about these stimuli\u2014you can weaken your instinct to believe your narratives. Your brain avoids mindfulness to save you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/mental-energy\/\">mental energy<\/a> in everyday life: If you can<em> <\/em>pour a glass of water without paying close attention, you\u2019ll likely do so on autopilot every time you\u2019re thirsty. While on autopilot in this way, you\u2019re more susceptible to your narratives and emotions controlling you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, David says you don\u2019t need to be mindful at every moment in order to ward against narrative and emotional control. Instead, pay deliberate attention to your surrounding stimuli from time to time throughout the day. You\u2019ll gradually become more mindful with practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>A Buddhist Perspective From <em>Mindfulness in Plain English<\/em><\/strong><br><br>David briefly mentions that you shouldn\u2019t judge your emotions and perceptions while practicing mindfulness. Looking into the original Buddhist principle of mindfulness clarifies the importance of a nonjudgmental perspective. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/mindfulness-in-plain-english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Mindfulness in Plain English,<\/em><\/a> Buddhist monk Gunaratana describes a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/mindfulness-in-plain-english\/chapter-13-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">characteristics of mindfulness <\/a>as they relate to being aware of\u2014but not assigning value to\u2014your emotions and surroundings:<br><br>\u2022 Mindfulness is nonconceptual awareness. There is no <em>conscious<\/em> thought, where judgment happens.<br>\u2022 Mindfulness is nonjudgmental awareness. You can\u2019t be aware if you\u2019re judging all of the stimuli around you.<br>\u2022 Mindfulness is awareness of change. However, while it watches this change, it doesn\u2019t comment on it.<br><br>While David\u2019s principles of mindfulness align with Buddhist principles, her practical suggestions differ slightly. She says you can practice mindfulness by intensely focusing on objects or actions for a period of time.
