(Charvet calls this matter of positive and negative motivation the \u201cDirection\u201d category.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Charvet, someone who\u2019s positively incentivized will frequently talk about their goals\u2014what they want to achieve and add to their life. For example, they might excitedly tell you, \u201cIf this project succeeds, we\u2019ll have the only product of its kind on the market.\u201d On the other hand, someone who\u2019s negatively incentivized will tend to talk about their fears and problems\u2014what they want to keep out of their life. They would emphasize that \u201cUnless we get this product to market quickly, we\u2019ll fall behind our competitors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To influence someone to take action, talk to positively incentivized people about opportunities they can gain and negatively incentivized people about threats they should avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Incentivize Yourself With Strategic Self-Talk<\/strong><br><br>Just as you would mirror the positive or negative language of others in an attempt to spur them into action, you can intentionally choose to think in the language of these mental habits to spur <em>yourself<\/em> into action. This works because the words you use to think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/mental-health\/self-talk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have a dramatic impact on your emotions and behavior<\/a>.<br><br>The strategy you need will differ depending on the incentives you prefer. Positively incentivized people <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/tribe-of-mentors\/1-page-summary#work-hard-to-achieve-important-goals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">often push themselves too hard<\/a>, as they hyperfocus on the potential rewards of accomplishing their goals. To avoid this mistake, regularly tell yourself that time spent on things that aren\u2019t directly related to your goal\u2014like sleeping and exercising\u2014are valid forms of progress toward your goals, since personal health boosts your productivity. For example, think to yourself, \u201cGoing for a run this morning will help me design this website.\u201d<br><br>On the other hand, negatively incentivized people may struggle to motivate themselves if there\u2019s no immediate penalty for inaction hanging over their heads. In this case, you could reframe the situation and <a href=\"https:\/\/tinybuddha.com\/blog\/overcoming-the-fear-of-loss-5-steps-to-get-unstuck\/#:~:text=3.%20Use%20loss%20aversion%20as%20motivation%20to%20pursue%20what%20you%20really%20want.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see inaction<em>\u2014<\/em>a <em>loss<\/em> of momentum\u2014as a threat that you need to avoid<\/a>.
