At first, he excelled at this job because, he explains, he acted like an \u201cUncle Tom\u201d\u2014a Black person extremely devoted to serving white people. The train sometimes took him to Harlem, and, the more time he spent there, the more he loved it and the more uninhibited he became in his interactions with white people. It showed in his work, and ultimately he was fired for being disrespectful to passengers. At 17, in 1943, he moved to Harlem to work at a nightclub called Small\u2019s Paradise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: At this time, railroad work was one of the most elite occupations a Black man could attain\u2014racist attitudes meant that Black people were continually relegated to servile positions, and the Pullman Company, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/story?id=5827657&amp;page=1#:~:text=Some%20of%20history%27s%20heavyweights%2C%20including%20Thurgood%20Marshall%20and%20Malcolm%20X%2C%20worked%20as%20Pullman%20porters.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for which Malcolm X worked<\/a>, capitalized on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/he-hired-formerly-enslaved-black-men-because-they-knew-how-to-be-servile-so-they-formed-a-union-bw2-17b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by exclusively hiring Black people to serve passengers<\/a>. The servile attitude expected of these workers was similar to that of Uncle Tom\u2014the titular character of Harriet Beecher Stowe\u2019s 1852 novel <em>Uncle Tom\u2019s Cabin<\/em>\u2014in stage productions of the novel. Although he displays courage and solidarity with other enslaved people in the novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=93059468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uncle Tom was portrayed on stage<\/a> as someone who would do anything\u2014including betraying other Black people\u2014to satisfy whites.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malcolm X, in Harlem, learned about the area&#8217;s history from his customers at Small&#8217;s Paradise. He found out how it came to be an all-Black area and why it seemed to cater to whites anyway (it was the Harlem Renaissance, a period of Black cultural enrichment, and white people enjoyed consuming Black entertainment). He also learned about the rules of <em>hustling\u2014<\/em>making money through illicit means\u2014from his customers, especially those few who were involved in the underground crime scene. Malcolm X explains that the criminals he knew became criminals because white society deprived them of the opportunity to fulfill their true potential\u2014they turned to crime in order to survive, and they did drugs to help them deal with the pressure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Underscoring the degree to which Harlem catered to whites, experts note that Small\u2019s Paradise was <a href=\"https:\/\/civilrightsheritage.com\/2019\/01\/28\/smalls-paradise-menu-malcolm-x\/#:~:text=Smalls%20Paradise%20was,African%2DAmerican%20celebrity.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the <em>only <\/em>major nightclub in Harlem that Black people were allowed to attend<\/a>. It outlived every other Harlem nightclub, finally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harlemworldmagazine.com\/smalls-paradise-harlem-new-york-1930-photograph\/#:~:text=Smalls%20Paradise%20was%20the%20longest%2Doperating%20club%20in%20Harlem%20before%20it%20closed%20in%201986.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">closing in 1986<\/a>. According to some criminal justice experts, hustlers like the ones Malcolm X encountered at Small\u2019s Paradise are particularly susceptible to being caught and incarcerated, in part because they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ojp.gov\/ncjrs\/virtual-library\/abstracts\/urban-street-crime-hustling-black-perspectives-crime-and-criminal#:~:text=STREET%20HUSTLERS%20ARE%20PARTICULARLY%20VULNERABLE%20TO%20ARREST%20AND%20PROSECUTION%2C%20AS%20THEY%20DO%20NOT%20SPECIALIZE%20IN%20A%20PARTICULAR%20AREA%20OF%20CRIME%2C%20OFTEN%20WORK%20ALONE%2C%20AND%20ARE%20FREQUENTLY%20INSOLVENT%20AND%20CANNOT%20AFFORD%20AN%20ATTORNEY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">typically too poor to afford a lawyer<\/a>. Other experts explain that, as Malcolm X argued, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2015\/10\/the-black-family-in-the-age-of-mass-incarceration\/403246\/#:~:text=The%20Gray%20Wastes%20draw%20from%20the%20most%20socioeconomically%20unfortunate%20among%20us%2C%20and%20thus%20take%20particular%20interest%20in%20those%20who%20are%20black.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">people are much more likely to turn to crime when they\u2019re impoverished<\/a>\u2014and Black people are more likely to be impoverished than whites.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malcolm X, too, would start committing crimes and doing drugs to get from day to day.<\/strong> For example, he says that he sold marijuana, got involved in the illegal gambling scene, and started doing cocaine so that he could steel himself for robbery. Over time, this began to catch up to him\u2014he felt emotionally lifeless, and the drugs were making him sick.<strong> <\/strong>After an altercation with another hustler almost ended in violence and led him to go on a multi-drug-fueled bender, Shorty took him back to Boston in 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Malcolm X says that he became addicted to drugs because they helped him cope with his difficult life, and experts on substance use say that this is one of the primary causes of addiction. They note that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/evil-deeds\/201002\/avoidance-sobriety-and-reality-the-psychology-addiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">people are often motivated to start using drugs by <em>escapism<\/em><\/a>\u2014a desire to avoid your present reality because it\u2019s too painful to cope with. Intoxicating drugs activate the reward center in your brain, making you feel better than you did when you were sober\u2014and with repeated use, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/basics\/addiction\/addiction-and-the-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you become addicted<\/a>. Experts also note that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/evil-deeds\/201002\/avoidance-sobriety-and-reality-the-psychology-addiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this is a vicious cycle<\/a>: You want to escape your life, so you do drugs; then, because the drugs lower your inhibitions, you make violent or criminal choices, giving you even more to escape from.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why did Malcolm X move to Harlem?
