But experts say the current uptick in cases is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/08\/14\/1193693791\/covid-cases-are-rising-this-summer-fall-boosters-are-just-around-the-corner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unsurprising<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll explore what the Covid-19 wave means, whether it\u2019s time to get a booster or start masking again, and how experts say people should handle this next phase of Covid-19.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-covid-19-rates-are-rising\"><strong>Covid-19 Rates Are Rising&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that after six or seven months of declines, Covid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2023\/07\/28\/1190443473\/the-cdc-sees-signs-of-a-late-summer-covid-wave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is on the rise again<\/a>. Cases began to rise in early July, as indicated by several <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#datatracker-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">metrics that the CDC tracks<\/a>. Each piece of evidence\u2014including data from wastewater surveillance and reports on test positivity rates, hospital admissions, and emergency department visits\u2014helps quantify Covid-19 levels across the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Wastewater levels<\/strong>: The levels of the Covid-19 virus detected in a community\u2019s wastewater can <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#wastewater-surveillance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">provide an early warning<\/a> that the virus is starting to spread. Covid-19 wastewater signals ticked up earlier in the summer. But the CDC reports that these signals don\u2019t seem to indicate that a larger surge is coming.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Test positivity rate<\/strong>: The proportion of people who take a Covid test and test positive helps to quantify Covid-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_weeklyhospitaladmissions_testpositivity_00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transmission and testing<\/a>. However, testing levels have dropped to new lows over the past year. That makes positivity rates a less useful indicator of the virus\u2019s spread.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Hospital admissions<\/strong>: The number of people hospitalized with Covid-19 helps to quantify the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_weeklyhospitaladmissions_weeklyhospitaladmissions100k_00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">circulation of the virus<\/a>. Hospitalizations have trended upward, rising 17% between June and July. <\/li><li><strong>Emergency department visits<\/strong>: The count of people who sought care at emergency departments and were diagnosed with Covid-19 measures the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_weeklyhospitaladmissions_7dayeddiagnosed_00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burden of disease<\/a>. These visits have ticked up, but experts note that the numbers are still low overall.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-bad-is-the-summer-covid-19-wave\"><strong>How Bad Is the Summer Covid-19 Wave?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though cases are rising, <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_weeklydeaths_select_00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deaths from Covid-19<\/a> are still declining. Even if infections and hospitalizations continue to rise, the current wave appears <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy\/2023\/7\/28\/23808360\/covid-19-2023-summer-cases-vaccines-boosters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unlikely to reach the proportions<\/a> of the surges caused by the first Delta and Omicron variants. Because so many people already have immunity from past vaccinations or infections, most cases are expected to be mild.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/08\/08\/what-to-know-about-covid-variant-eris-00110286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dominant variant<\/a> of Covid-19 currently spreading in the US is EG.5, a subvariant of Omicron. EG.5 is now responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/premium\/article\/new-covid-variant-eg-5-surge-mask\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 17%<\/a> of Covid-19 cases in the US. Though it doesn\u2019t seem to cause more severe illness than past variants, experts say that EG.5 is very transmissible. Some think that EG.5 might become the dominant strain of Covid-19 globally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-it-time-to-get-a-booster-or-start-masking-again\"><strong>Is It Time to Get a Booster, or Start Masking Again?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The summer wave coincides with a period of waiting for the next Covid-19 vaccine. The new Covid-19 boosters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/health\/2023\/8\/9\/23825133\/covid-eris-variant-eg5-cdc-pandemic-coronavirus-precautions-masking-booster-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will target XBB strains of Omicron<\/a>, from which EG.5 descends. Though these versions of the vaccine weren\u2019t designed to target EG.5, they&#8217;re expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/eg5-coronavirus-variant-dominant-symptoms-spread-rcna98768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confer at least some protection<\/a> against serious complications from the new Omicron subvariant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-precautions-does-the-cdc-recommend-taking\"><strong>What Precautions Does the CDC Recommend Taking?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The CDC doesn\u2019t currently plan to change its recommendations for preventative measures like masking. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/prevention.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agency recommends<\/a> that people take precautions to prevent infection, regardless of community levels of the virus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the CDC currently characterizes actions that it once recommended as standard practice\u2014such as wearing a mask or respirator in public spaces and maintaining social distance from others\u2014as \u201cprevention actions to add as needed.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-should-we-handle-the-next-phase-of-covid-19\"><strong>How Should We Handle the Next Phase of Covid-19?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This may be what it looks like for the virus to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/covid-19-moves-pandemic-endemic-chapter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">become endemic<\/a>: While infections have stopped growing at an exponential rate or overwhelming healthcare systems, the virus is still circulating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving on from Covid hasn\u2019t been an option for <a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/article\/covid-immunocompromised-safety-guidance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">millions of people who are immunocompromised<\/a>, have a disability or chronic illness, or otherwise face a higher risk of a severe Covid-19 infection. Some have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/20\/us\/immunocompromised-high-risk-americans-covid-measures-forgotten\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported feeling forgotten<\/a> as mitigation efforts like masking requirements and vaccine mandates end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some experts argue that a person\u2019s decision to travel unmasked on public transportation, for instance, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/blog\/2022\/what-do-we-owe-each-other-balancing-personal-freedom-and-collective-responsibility-age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meaningful consequences for people<\/a> at a higher risk of death, serious infection, or long-lasting damage from Covid-19. Even for healthy, vaccinated adults, the risks and consequences of long Covid remain uncertain. Doctors and scientists say that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/17\/well\/live\/covid-reinfection.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">damage of multiple infections<\/a> is also unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-should-we-expect-this-fall-and-winter\"><strong>What Should We Expect This Fall and Winter?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts expect to see another Covid-19 wave in the fall and winter, accompanied by circulation of influenza and RSV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s currently unclear whether the CDC will recommend the new booster for everyone, or just those aged 60 or older. Some experts say that it would be a good idea for everyone to get vaccinated, since considerable time has passed since the most recent, bivalent boosters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/07\/29\/covid-vaccine-what-uptake-of-new-shots-could-look-like.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expect low rates of uptake<\/a> for the new vaccines. That\u2019s because many people think the pandemic is over, and few are worried about contracting the virus.
