Note that, rather than one-time achievements, these tend to be character traits and lifestyle choices; in other words, things that you do continuously throughout your life. If the way you live today reflected the way you live your entire life, what would you do with your 24 hours? Would you mindlessly chase after success or devote time to cultivating your eulogy virtues\u2014to improving the lives of those around you?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, many people (especially young people) tend to focus on their <em>r\u00e9sum\u00e9 virtues<\/em>. <strong>These are accomplishments that you might use to impress others<\/strong>\u2014for example, holding a prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/job-titles\/\">job title<\/a>, winning a world-class competition, or earning a degree from a highly selective school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks says that these kinds of accomplishments only bring you fleeting, worldly rewards like money or fame. Furthermore, those rewards fade quickly unless you keep accomplishing more and more\u2014which, remember, will become more difficult as you age. Anything that requires you to compete against or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/comparing-ourselves-to-others\/\">compare yourself to others<\/a> probably falls into this category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Why Are We Driven to Compete With Others?<\/strong><br><br>If competing with others only brings fleeting rewards, why are we so driven to do it? One possible explanation is that it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/blog\/psychpedia\/competitiveness#:~:text=COMPETITIVENESS%20IN%20BIOLOGY%20AND%20PSYCHOLOGY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an evolutionary holdover<\/a>\u2014in other words, competitiveness may be coded into our genes because our ancestors <em>had <\/em>to compete with each other for food, shelter, and mates.<br><br>However, as biologist Richard Dawkins says in <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-selfish-gene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Selfish Gene<\/em><\/a>, humans aren\u2019t slaves to their genetic programming; we\u2019re unusual (possibly unique) in our ability to consciously <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-selfish-gene\/chapter-4#the-development-of-consciousness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">choose to go against our biological drives<\/a>. For example, our genes should compel us to have as many children as possible, but many people choose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20230208-the-adults-celebrating-child-free-lives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not to have children at all<\/a>.
