Power posing also continues to be frequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterclass.com\/articles\/how-to-be-more-confident\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">listed on advice websites as a way to boost your confidence<\/a>.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The simple act of making yourself bigger\u2014or even louder\u2014is an expression of power recognized throughout the world and among both animals and humans. By extending your limbs, lifting your head, and raising your voice, you can <strong>bypass the negative thoughts fueling your anxiety and essentially trick your brain into feeling confident<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/12-rules-for-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>12 Rules for Life<\/em><\/a>, Jordan Peterson explains that it\u2019s beneficial for animals to jockey for higher positioning on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/social-hierarchy-meaning\/\">social hierarchy<\/a> through displays of dominance because it <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/12-rules-for-life\/rule-1#the-biology-of-social-status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">helps distribute scarce resources while avoiding combative conflict<\/a>. For example, if two animals both want to hunt for food in the same area, they can make themselves look big, size each other up, and decide who\u2019s most likely to win a fight. If one of them then backs down, they can both avoid injury or death. Here, we\u2019ll describe how some of the controversy surrounding Cuddy\u2019s work has unfolded.&nbsp;<br><br>Cuddy\u2019s research on the effects of power posing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/18\/magazine\/when-the-revolution-came-for-amy-cuddy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">initially received widespread acclaim<\/a>\u2014she was featured on major media outlets such as CNN, Oprah, and TED. However, over the next several years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kimelsesser\/2018\/04\/03\/power-posing-is-back-amy-cuddy-successfully-refutes-criticism\/?sh=38f5538b3b8e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some researchers criticized the results<\/a> of her original <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/0956797610383437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2010 power posing study<\/a>, arguing that Cuddy and her colleagues may have selectively reported data and pointing out that subsequent studies by other researchers failed to replicate the results. In 2016, the main author on the initial study, Dana Carney, stated that she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/10\/01\/496093672\/power-poses-co-author-i-do-not-believe-the-effects-are-real\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no longer supported the conclusion from the study<\/a> due to her updated analysis of the evidence.&nbsp;<br><br>This evidence includes studies that found <strong>no statistically significant <em>hormonal <\/em>effect of power posing<\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bps.org.uk\/psychologist\/decade-power-posing-where-do-we-standhttps:\/\/www.bps.org.uk\/psychologist\/decade-power-posing-where-do-we-stand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">effects of power posing may also be greater when comparing a high-power posture to a low-power posture<\/a> as opposed to comparing the power pose to a neutral posture.&nbsp;<br><br>In addition to the debate over her research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kimelsesser\/2020\/10\/02\/the-debate-on-power-posing-continues-heres-where-we-stand\/?sh=5a045442202e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some of the criticism Cuddy received was targeted more at Cuddy as a person<\/a>. For example, some critics railed against the amount of money she made from her book and speaking events.
