But approaching someone with a <strong>well-thought-out inquiry<\/strong> could spark a discussion and a relationship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Sandberg often gets vague, general questions like, \u201cWhat\u2019s it like working at Facebook?\u201d This leads nowhere. But when she was approached and asked to discuss a nonprofit that offered college counseling to low-income students\u2014a topic she cared about deeply\u2014she was willing to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take every opportunity to learn from someone you admire. Grab a moment after a meeting to ask for advice. Make it casual and quick, then follow up as an opportunity to ask for more guidance. Don\u2019t get stuck on the \u201cmentor\u201d label. It\u2019s the relationship that\u2019s important, not the formality of the setup. A mentor relationship can simply be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/methods-of-decision-making-crucial-conversations\/\">decision-making<\/a> help from someone investing time in you. Follow up on your word, unless you want to gain a reputation for making promises that you don\u2019t keep.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hard work. <\/strong>If your mentor is someone from your workplace (for example, your manager), the best thing you can offer them is high-quality work that produces results for your company.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Something material.<\/strong> For example, you could send your mentor a thank-you gift each time they help you. Alternatively, you could donate to a cause that they\u2019re passionate about or a nonprofit they work with.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wrapping-up\"><strong>Wrapping Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mentorship is great for people trying to make it big in the world. Through mentors, you can make great connections that are vital for your career.
