His presence signified that <em>Times<\/em> might soon review EMP. The restaurant\u2019s three-star review appeared in the <em>Times <\/em>nearly a year later.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: The <em>New York Times\u2019<\/em> rating system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/07\/reader-center\/the-art-and-etiquette-of-a-new-york-times-restaurant-review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maxed out at three stars<\/a> until 1964, when the fourth star was added to indicate that a restaurant was \u201cextraordinary.\u201d The newspaper explains that the stars \u201creflect the reviewer\u2019s reaction primarily to food, with ambience, service, and price taken into consideration.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/03\/13\/why-our-reviews-have-stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The star system has received some criticism from readers<\/a> given that a reviewer\u2019s experience is highly subjective. However, the <em>Times <\/em>has chosen to keep the system, noting that readers can glean more detail from the review article than from how many stars a restaurant receives.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guidara attributes the three stars to EMP\u2019s continued commitment to focus on the details, which EMP staff demonstrated in two ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, EMP staff <strong>focused on consistently mastering the smallest details. <\/strong>These details didn\u2019t seem individually important, but altogether they contributed to providing an <em>overall <\/em>atmosphere of exceptional service. Guidara contends that this atmosphere was palpable not just to the guests but also to the staff and improved everybody\u2019s experience. For example, the staff carefully curated how loudly they played the music depending on how many people were in the restaurant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guidara argues that seeing this consistency helped servers when they were having a difficult time due to uncontrollable circumstances\u2014such as guests in a bad mood\u2014as it reminded them that there were some things they still could control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Several self-help authors maintain that when you face an obstacle, you should focus on what you <em>can <\/em>control rather than what you can\u2019t. Some go even further: In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-power-of-positive-thinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Power of Positive Thinking<\/em><\/a>, Norman Vincent Peale contends that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-power-of-positive-thinking\/part-2-3#we-create-our-own-obstacles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>any <\/em>obstacle is defeatable<\/a>\u2014as long as you <em>believe<\/em> that you can surmount it. If this seems unreasonable, try to think of creative ways that you might be able to overcome the obstacle. For example, adjusting the music at EMP may have had a bigger impact than Guidara realized. Studies indicate that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsretail.com\/resources\/play-music-your-restaurant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adjusting the volume of restaurant music can improve how good customers think the food tastes<\/a>, while switching to classical music can increase customer spending.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, EMP staff <strong>followed the \u201cone-inch rule\u201d <\/strong>that Guidara developed. Guidara points out that, no matter how well you prepare something, you can mess it up at the last minute. At EMP, the staff learned to remain focused during that last \u201cone inch\u201d so they could execute everything<em> <\/em>perfectly instead of ruining something due to inattention in the final moments.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: It\u2019s not always crucial to do everything perfectly or to focus on the last \u201cone inch.\u201d. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theminiadhdcoach.com\/living-with-adhd\/adhd-unfinished-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Finishing the last details of a task may be particularly difficult for people with ADHD<\/a>.
