Experts say that food prices will continue to rise through the end of 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below we&#8217;ll take a look at the causes of grocery inflation, and predictions for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-food-prices-are-getting-out-of-hand\">Food Prices Are Getting Out of Hand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grocery store prices began rising at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/cea\/written-materials\/2023\/06\/16\/grocery-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">start of the Covid-19 pandemic<\/a> as processing facilities paused and slowed operations and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/13\/business\/food-prices-inflation-may.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">labor, transportation, and raw materials costs increased<\/a>. This led companies to pass along those cost increases to consumers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, the Federal Reserve implemented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/investing\/fed-funds-rate-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a series of aggressive interest rate hikes<\/a> to try to tame inflated prices. But critics warned that<strong> these efforts <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/errolschweizer\/2022\/12\/18\/why-the-federal-reserve-cant-solve-food-price-inflation\/?sh=7bce8c213bbb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>wouldn\u2019t be enough to counter a significant driver of grocery inflation<\/strong><\/a><strong>: Corporate pricing and profiteering strategies<\/strong>, which were slowing food sales, altering consumer buying habits, and worsening food insecurity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, the White House\u2019s Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) reported seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/cea\/written-materials\/2023\/06\/16\/grocery-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signs of grocery inflation finally cooling<\/a>, with drops in egg, fresh fruit, dairy, cereal, and baked goods prices driving grocery inflation down. But the CEA also noted that <strong>food prices remain considerably higher than before the pandemic<\/strong>\u2014and that overall they\u2019re still rising.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-causing-high-food-prices\"><strong>What\u2019s Causing High Food Prices<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/finance\/price-of-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inflation<\/a>, higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-cost-of-labor\/\">labor costs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/08\/economy\/food-prices-inflation\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elevated transportation costs<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/food-prices-inflation-inputs-profits-heres-where-that-money-goes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supply chain issues<\/a> have dogged food manufacturers and retailers since the start of the pandemic. In addition, experts say the following factors contribute to high and rising food prices:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/finance\/price-of-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">High production costs<\/a>. These costs have increased in part because farmers have been paying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/food-prices-inflation-inputs-profits-heres-where-that-money-goes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">higher fertilizer and animal feed prices<\/a> and also because of packaging materials shortages. The USDA expects production costs to increase another 4.1% this year.\u00a0<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/food-prices-inflation-inputs-profits-heres-where-that-money-goes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greedflation<\/a>. Many companies continue to raise food prices higher than cost increases <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/article\/is-greedflation-real-or-a-conspiracy-theory-shortform-all-sides-shortform?sf_source=businessnewsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to pad their bottom line<\/a>. <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/28\/business\/food-inflation-prices.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Company efforts to offset sales volume declines<\/a>. Some businesses have increased prices to compensate for consumers cutting back on their food spending\u2014which many Americans have done in response to companies raising food prices.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/finance\/price-of-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bad weather<\/a>. Wildfires and droughts in the western US led to lower crop yields, which has driven up food costs.\u00a0<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/finance\/price-of-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The war in Ukraine<\/a>. Ukraine, which before the war produced 12% and 9% of the world\u2019s corn and wheat market, respectively, has been unable to export these goods at pre-war levels.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-looking-ahead\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There\u2019s broad agreement that food prices will <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/finance\/price-of-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>continue to rise in 2023<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> The USDA predicts a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/money\/economy\/inflation-is-coming-down-why-your-grocery-bill-isnt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6.6% increase in prices<\/a> for everything from poultry to dairy products, fats and oils, and cereal. Eggs, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/article\/as-egg-prices-soar-so-do-conspiracy-theories-shortform-all-sides-shortform?sf_source=businessnewsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">average price jumped 60%<\/a> last December and remains 36% higher than in 2022, could see a price hike of anywhere from 5% to 33% between now and the end of the year, reflecting the product\u2019s continued price volatility.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though experts expect upcoming price increases to happen more slowly than in 2022\u2014and say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/money\/economy\/inflation-is-coming-down-why-your-grocery-bill-isnt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the cost of some items will even fall slightly<\/a>, including for beef, pork and fresh fruits\u2014some economists warn that <strong>once grocery store prices go up <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcnc.com\/article\/money\/lower-inflation-impact-grocery-prices\/275-28ec8239-494a-4f69-a5fe-90243a5fdbde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>they tend not to return to their previous levels<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If inflation is going down, why are food prices still rising?
