The deadly, $250,000-per-seat escapade raises questions about the perils and possible benefits of extreme tourism\u2014an industry growing in popularity among the world\u2019s financial elite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading for the two points of view on extreme tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tourism-for-the-elite\">Tourism for the Elite<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Extreme tourism is travel to a dangerous destination\u2014or participation in dangerous, often life-threatening events\u2014for risk, thrill, or adventure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A growing number of companies are coordinating the dangerous adventures, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-06-22\/crew-members-on-mission-to-titanic-believed-dead-oceangate-says?sref=mIZ1p2Gz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OceanGate<\/a>, the maker of the fated Titan, which since 2021 has offered 10-day trips to view the wreckage of the Titanic for $250,000 a seat.\u00a0<\/li><li>Richard Branson\u2019s Virgin Galactic, which recently launched its first commercial space flight and has a wait list of 800 thrill-seekers who have paid $250,000 to $450,000 for a 90-minute, round-trip flight.\u00a0<\/li><li>Elon Musk\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/extreme-tourism-allows-ultra-wealthy-explore-new-frontiers-2023-06-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SpaceX<\/a>, which plans to offer three-day trips to circle the moon\u2014once Musk\u2019s rocket passes tests that it has, to date, failed. Every seat on the future flight has already been booked by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cntraveller.in\/story\/how-much-did-japanese-billionaire-yusaku-maezawa-pay-to-be-spacexs-first-tourist-to-the-moon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">may have paid upwards of $70 million.<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-view-1-extreme-tourism-is-a-dangerous-indulgence\"><strong>View 1: Extreme Tourism Is a Dangerous Indulgence<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some experts argue that the ultra-rich\u2019s creation of and participation in extreme tourism opportunities is problematic because they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-06-23\/titanic-sub-implosion-highlights-risks-of-virgin-galactic-blue-origin-too?sref=mIZ1p2Gz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Are dangerously unregulated<\/a>.
