There\u2019s a 98% chance that in one of these years, the Earth will reach the hottest temperatures ever recorded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn more about the impacts of extreme heat and what can be done to counter it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-extreme-heat-is-worsening\">Extreme Heat Is Worsening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ready.gov\/heat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US government<\/a> defines extreme heat as \u201ca period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two to three days.\u201d Environmental researchers say a growing number of people around the world are living with extreme heat, and it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/news\/heat-waves-arent-going-away-heres-how-we-can-prepare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not going away<\/a>. <strong>Global temperatures have been rising since the 19th century, in large part due to humans <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/17\/climate\/record-heat-forecast.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>burning fossil fuels<\/strong><\/a><strong> and releasing gasses that trap heat in the atmosphere.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to fossil fuel warming, a cyclical phenomenon known as the El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation contributes to global temperature increases by shifting heat in and out of deep ocean layers. Inadequate shade worsens heat troubles for city dwellers, who often have little refuge outdoors.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The top weather-related cause of death in the US, extreme heat wreaks havoc in a host of ways,<\/strong> including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/news\/heat-waves-arent-going-away-heres-how-we-can-prepare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Triggering acute and chronic health conditions<\/a> like heatstroke and organ failure.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.mit.edu\/explainers\/extreme-heat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damaging infrastructure<\/a> like roads and electrical wires.<\/li><li>Stressing energy systems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Damaging and killing crops and livestock.<\/li><li>Fueling droughts and wildfires.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Poorer Mental Health&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the World Health Organization, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/03-06-2022-why-mental-health-is-a-priority-for-action-on-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rising temperatures are a threat to mental health<\/a> as the heat makes you more anxious or depressed. Those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/climate-change-and-mental-health-connections\/affects-on-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">existing mental conditions are especially at risk<\/a>\u2014the American Psychiatric Association states that<strong> people with chemical imbalances have a harder time coping with the heat<\/strong>. Further, studies suggest a <a href=\"https:\/\/eos.org\/research-spotlights\/the-effects-of-climate-change-on-u-s-suicide-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">link between warmer temperatures and an increase in suicide rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reduced Productivity&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The next time you don\u2019t get as much done as you\u2019d like, you can blame climate change. The International Labor Organization estimates that at 91-93\u00b0 Fahrenheit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/wcmsp5\/groups\/public\/---dgreports\/---dcomm\/---publ\/documents\/publication\/wcms_711919.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you\u2019re only working at 50% capacity<\/a>. While it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2015\/05\/12\/paper-finds-a-surprising-link-between-warm-temperatures-and-math-test-scores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tough for office workers who have to perform complex tasks like math<\/a>, it can be brutal for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2019\/11\/researcher-analyzes-effects-of-climate-change-on-productivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">those working outdoors<\/a> and exposed to direct sunlight (such as construction workers and farmers) and inside manufacturing plants (which can be sweltering due to heat-emitting machinery and a lack of air-conditioning).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lower Libido<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When your body works hard to cool you down on hot days, this not only reduces your ability to regulate your emotions but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/lifestyle\/lets-talk-sex-is-global-warming-impacting-your-sex-life-heres-the-surprising-answer-7997299.html\">lowers your sex drive<\/a>. In particular, men may produce less testosterone as they divert their energy from reproduction to temperature regulation, negatively affecting arousal, erection, and ejaculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Excessive heat\u2014and its impacts\u2014are <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/17\/climate\/record-heat-forecast.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>worsened by humidity<\/strong><\/a><strong>, which makes people feel even hotter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts say that as temperatures soar in the coming decades, <strong>more people living in excessively hot, humid parts of the world\u2014including billions in India and China\u2014will have to buy air conditioners.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But today\u2019s AC units <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/06\/07\/air-conditioners-humid-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>aren\u2019t prepared<\/strong><\/a><strong> to meet the extreme heat and humidity of tomorrow.<\/strong> The majority of traditional AC units\u2019 energy is used not to cool, but to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2542435122000940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remove humidity from the air<\/a>\u2014an inefficient process for which they weren\u2019t designed and one that emits considerable planet-warming refrigerants into the air.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As billions more people buy air conditioners and toggle down the temperature to beat the heat in the coming decades, more energy will be wasted and more greenhouse gasses emitted.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-looking-ahead\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts say <strong>there will come a point when humans <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6207087\/improve-heat-tolerance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>won\u2019t be able to adapt to extreme heat<\/strong><\/a>\u2014even over the course of centuries\u2014because body temperature, a shared trait from 100 million years ago, evolves so slowly. If the planet warms 2.5 to 3 degrees Celsius, much of the global population will experience conditions in which the human body is simply unable to cool itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this doesn\u2019t mean that excessive heat will suddenly kill humans. Societies can, and will have to, adapt to extreme heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts say that governments must prepare for extreme heat now, taking the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/news\/heat-waves-arent-going-away-heres-how-we-can-prepare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Cool neighborhoods<\/strong><\/a>. Cities should plant more trees and vegetation and use outdoor materials that reduce heat, like pavement cooling technology, to reduce temperatures in urban areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Create more shade.<\/strong> Urban planners should identify opportunities to provide more shade at bus shelters, school playgrounds, and other high-traffic areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Increase high-risk communities\u2019 access to cooling. <\/strong>Apartment owners should provide cooling services to tenants\u2014just as they provide heating\u2014and cities should subsidize cooling in low-income neighborhoods.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/06\/07\/air-conditioners-humid-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Update AC testing and standards<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>Since billions of people living in the hottest, most humid parts of the globe will need to buy air conditioners in the years ahead, countries should prevent inefficient, outdated AC units\u2014which aren\u2019t tested for temperatures above 95 degrees or high humidity\u2014from entering their homes. They can do this by updating AC standards to bring more efficient technologies to market.
