By changing your environment, you can reduce your use of technology and stay focused on whatever task you have at hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to reduce technology use to stay concentrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-change-your-environment\"><strong>Change Your Environment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Gazzaley and Rosen are optimistic that we can become more resistant to interference and distractions by improving our cognitive control, they argue that we can also combat interference and learn how to reduce technology use by <strong>addressing the root causes\u2014increased accessibility of information as well as increased anxiety and boredom<\/strong> when focusing on one information source.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-change-1-take-steps-to-reduce-accessibility\">Change #1: Take Steps to Reduce Accessibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First, Gazzaley and Rosen argue that <strong>we should take concrete steps to reduce our access to external sources of information\u2014especially our smartphones.<\/strong> Of course, they point out that limiting accessibility will look different depending on the task at hand; when driving a car, for example, you can simply put your phone in the backseat, but this isn\u2019t an option when you\u2019re at work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless, they point out that limiting access is possible in most circumstances. For instance, they recommend closing unnecessary tabs when working on your laptop and creating \u201ctech-free\u201d zones when socializing with friends or family. Although, strictly speaking, this strategy doesn\u2019t reduce your <em>access <\/em>to your phone, it does reduce the number of external interruptions that you\u2019re subjected to each day.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-change-2-take-steps-to-reduce-boredom\">Change #2: Take Steps to Reduce Boredom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, Gazzaley and Rosen contend that <strong>taking active steps to reduce boredom in situations prone to interference can help us minimize interruptions and distractions. <\/strong>Once again, they point out that the exact process of reducing boredom will look different depending on the task at hand. However, one frequent activity that they endorse to reduce boredom is simply listening to music\u2014whether while working or studying. In both cases, studies have shown that listening to music can increase cognitive performance without being especially distracting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Boredom is especially endemic within the workplace, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roberthalf.com\/blog\/management-tips\/bored-at-work-charts?utm_campaign=Press_Release&amp;utm_medium=Link&amp;utm_source=Press_Release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one survey of 382 US office workers<\/a> reporting being bored for above 10 hours per week. To that end, experts recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rachelmontanez\/2018\/10\/22\/the-best-ways-to-handle-boredom-at-work\/?sh=2a0ff2242c05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a variety of additional steps<\/a> specifically geared toward combating workplace boredom. For example, you can try altering your workplace environment so that it feels stimulating rather than dull. Alternatively, set daily goals that you can work toward to improve your motivation. And if you do try listening to music, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/best-music-while-working_l_5f8637a2c5b6e9e76fb84410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experts recommend instrumental music when you need to focus<\/a> and music with lyrics when you\u2019re tackling more mindless tasks.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-change-3-take-steps-to-reduce-anxiety\">Change #3: Take Steps to Reduce Anxiety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Gazzaley and Rosen argue that <strong>finding ways to decrease the anxiety we feel when apart from technology helps us combat interference.<\/strong> In particular, they have one clear recommendation for alleviating technology-induced anxiety in all domains: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/hub\/personal-life\/relationships\/personal\/how-to-set-healthy-boundaries\/\">Set boundaries<\/a> with your contacts about when you will and won\u2019t be available.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In defense of this approach, they argue that the root cause of most anxiety that we feel when apart from our devices is our concern about missing a text, an email, or an instant message. After all, technology has led us to expect 24\/7 availability and instant responses, leading to anxiety when we <em>aren\u2019t <\/em>available 24\/7 and responding instantly. So, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/when-to-say-no\/\">setting boundaries<\/a> and letting contacts know that we won\u2019t be available during\u2014say\u2014work, school, or mealtimes, we won\u2019t worry about not meeting others\u2019 expectations, making us less anxious.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Though setting boundaries can be effective in reducing the pressure to be constantly available, some countries\u2019 legislatures have decided this burden shouldn\u2019t fall on workers alone.
