How can you help promote individuality among students?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>The Gardener and the Carpenter<\/em>, Alison Gopnik says schools should support and encourage children&#8217;s natural processes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/keep-learning-keep-growing\/\">learning and growth<\/a>. She likens this to the work of a gardener nurturing their garden, as opposed to the work of a carpenter building something based on a specific blueprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn how the carpenter model promotes conformity that ultimately harms older children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conformity-in-schools\"><strong>Conformity in Schools<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While much of Gopnik\u2019s focus is on very young children, she addresses how the carpenter model continues to shape childcare as children grow older and how it contributes to conformity in schools. As children move past the stages of early childhood, their learning begins to center more around goals, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-develop-skills-2\/\">developing skills<\/a> that will help them succeed as adults. Gopnik notes that this presents an unavoidable contradiction in parenting\u2014while we shouldn\u2019t design our child care around preparing children to be adults, it\u2019s also necessary that we teach them the skills they need to be adults. She argues that the best way to do this is to tap into children\u2019s natural learning abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: While Gopnik seems to view the process of preparing your kids for the real world to be at odds with letting your kids explore their natural interests, that may not be the case: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2017\/10\/171024103322.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Children appear to voluntarily practice skills for adulthood<\/a> as young as age six. If children know what\u2019s expected of them in the future, they willingly prepare themselves to meet those expectations. Engaging children\u2019s natural learning abilities in preparing them for adulthood could be as simple as talking to children about their future goals and how to reach those goals.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to industrialization, the school system we use today didn\u2019t exist. Instead, children\u2019s education came largely from their caregivers and through apprenticeships. Children as young as six would enter into apprenticeships where they would learn and master the skills required for a certain occupation, using the methods of observation, imitation, and testimony to become adept at skills that would help them as adults. While this is still goal-directed learning and had its flaws, it tapped into children\u2019s individual abilities and natural inclinations to observe and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/learn-from-experts\/\">learn from experts<\/a> through the process of trial and error.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Some cultures still employ some version of the apprenticeship model. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/why-the-world-should-take-note-of-the-swiss-apprenticeship-model\/45810312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Students in Switzerland<\/a> have the opportunity to train through an apprenticeship that provides them with an income while supplementing their training with a few days of in-school learning. Experts suggest that the skills they learn from apprenticeships will help them in their general lives and that they still have the option later of choosing a different path. Still, there are concerns that children shouldn\u2019t choose a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/career-path-development\/\">career path<\/a> at such a young age, in part because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/swiss-education_are-14-year-olds-ready-to-make-a-career-choice-\/44874760\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their identities are still developing<\/a>, and thus the apprenticeship they choose might <em>not <\/em>build upon their innate abilities in the way that Gopnik describes.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With industrialization came a shift from apprenticeship learning to schooling. Where apprenticeships focused on giving children unique, specialized skills, schools were intended to give all children a universal set of skills for the modern world. This led to a greater and greater emphasis on standardization, which is intended to create equal opportunities for all children, but in reality often ignores children\u2019s unique individual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/different-types-of-learning-styles\/\">learning styles<\/a> in favor of uniformity. Because school success is so tied to success as an adult, the carpenter schooling model reinforces the carpenter parenting model, as parents focus their efforts on making sure their children are good students instead of giving them supportive environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Teaching the Right Skills and Parent Collaboration<\/strong><br><br>The skills taught in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/standardized-education\/\">standardized education<\/a> systems are useful but limited and don\u2019t cover all the different skills needed in adulthood. Standardized education teaches things like critical thinking, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-read-and-understand-effectively\/\">reading comprehension<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-do-well-on-exams\/\">test-taking skills<\/a>, but it often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/reflect-and-reset\/202110\/what-executive-functioning-is-and-why-it-matters-at-any-age#:~:text=we%20first%20need%20to%20understand%20what,fallen%20into%20and%20which%20skills%20we%20favor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neglects important functioning skills<\/a> like response inhibition, emotional control, and task initiation\u2014skills that may have been covered in apprenticeships.&nbsp;<br><br>To prepare their children to succeed in school, parents may also focus on testing skills at the expense of other functioning skills, thereby falling into the carpenter model trap. Research shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-moment-youth\/201108\/family-school-partnerships-the-21st-century\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">parents\u2019 engagement in children\u2019s education<\/a> correlates with greater student success. But it\u2019s much more effective when approached as a parent-educator partnership rather than as a closed system with standardized mandates that parents have to follow without the ability to give their own input.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The carpenter schooling model, like the carpenter parenting model, views variations as flaws\u2014or even diseases. Children who don\u2019t fit neatly into the schooling model\u2019s mold are often given diagnoses of conditions such as ADHD, and because the skills required for school success are not skills that come naturally to most children, such diagnoses are very widespread. We then often drug those children to make them fit the mold when we should be adjusting our schooling model to fit our children and their individual needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Gopnik implies that a diagnosis of ADHD is the result of not fitting into the carpenter schooling model, which suggests that it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/social-constructionist-theory\/\">social construct<\/a> based on our societal structure. But <a href=\"https:\/\/chadd.org\/about-adhd\/the-science-of-adhd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ADHD is a neurobiological condition<\/a> that has existed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/adhd\/evolution#ADHD-and-hunter-gatherers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">throughout human history<\/a>, long before today\u2019s schooling model came into existence. Some readers may take issue with the use of the term \u201cdrugging\u201d to describe providing children with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/does-medication-help-adhd\/\">ADHD medication<\/a>. Research shows that ADHD medication is an effective treatment for the majority of children with the condition, and, contrary to what many believe, ADHD medication actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.understood.org\/en\/articles\/study-adhd-medication-appears-to-reduce-the-risk-of-drug-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lowers the risk of drug abuse<\/a> in people who have ADHD.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gopnik suggests that we should view schools as a place for children to grow and flourish, thereby encouraging individuality and discovery. Instead of assessing schools based on test scores, she explains, we should assess them based on observations of classrooms and on how well teachers respond to students\u2019 individual needs and differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>How Effective Are Classroom Observations?<\/strong><br><br>Gopnik\u2019s recommendations for assessing schools and teachers\u2014in combination with student test scores\u2014are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schoolserv.in\/Criteria-and-Techniques-of-Teacher-Evaluation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already used for assessing teacher effectiveness<\/a> in public schools, and these assessments are often used to reward teachers deemed to be effective or punish or remove those deemed to be ineffective. Teacher effectiveness is shown to be <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.und.edu\/theses\/2240\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the number one determinant of a school\u2019s impact<\/a> on student achievement.&nbsp;<br><br>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/evaluating-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research doesn\u2019t support the idea<\/a> that these evaluations have an impact on teacher effectiveness and instead shows that the location of a school (which heavily influences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincolninst.edu\/publications\/articles\/2022-04-public-schools-property-tax-comparison-education-models\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">school funding through property taxes<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/teacher-network\/teacher-blog\/2014\/oct\/31\/improve-teacher-assess-schools-performance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the supportiveness of a school environment toward its teachers<\/a> (for example, having school leadership that encourages teachers to learn independently and providing teachers with trusting mentors) are better predictors of teacher (and thus school) effectiveness.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why is conformity in schools so encouraged?
