When Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg launched the metaverse in October 2021<\/a> he called the immersive virtual world<\/a> \u201cthe next chapter for the internet.\u201d But some say the metaverse didn\u2019t just fail to live up to its promise to revolutionize human interactions in the virtual world, it actually died<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The metaverse is a virtual reality (VR) platform where people can <\/strong>socialize, work, and play<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong> Some say the elusively defined<\/a> metaverse isn\u2019t so much a specific type of technology as an evolution in people\u2019s interaction<\/em> with technology<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The metaverse includes both virtual reality<\/strong><\/a>\u2014where virtual worlds theoretically exist even without people\u2019s participation in them\u2014and augmented reality<\/strong> (AR)\u2014where the digital and physical worlds coexist. People can access the metaverse not just through dedicated VR and AR equipment, but also with phones, PCs, and game consoles.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zuckerberg signaled his company\u2019s all-in commitment<\/a> to the immersive digital realm when he announced the renaming of Facebook to \u201cMeta\u201d during the metaverse\u2019s launch. At that time, he touted the metaverse as <\/strong>\u201cthe future of the internet\u201d<\/strong><\/a>\u2014an alternate reality where you could experience being \u201dright there with people\u201d<\/a> regardless of how physically far away you were from them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concerns About the Metaverse\u2019s Welfare <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In March of 2023, less than two years after launching the metaverse, Mark Zuckerberg dramatically shifted gears<\/a> amid an unexpected, explosive global race to dominate the burgeoning Artificial Intelligence (AI) landscape<\/strong>. He began publicly pitching Meta as a major player in the AI sphere\u2014and he stopped talking about the metaverse.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Media outlets and analysts speculated about the change: Is the metaverse dead? Has Zuckerberg turned his back on the project into which he\u2019d sunk billions of dollars<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
