He provides 12 rules for doing so in his book <em>Beyond Order<\/em>. Rule 3 says this: Do not hide unwanted things in the fog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more to learn exactly what this means and how to improve this area of your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jordan-peterson-s-beyond-order-rule-3\">Jordan Peterson&#8217;s <em>Beyond Order: <\/em>Rule 3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Peterson provides this recommendation with <em>Beyond Order<\/em> Rule 3:<strong> Do not hide unwanted things in the fog. <\/strong>Basically, he&#8217;s saying that you shouldn\u2019t ignore chronic stressors lest they become larger issues. Daily life is full of tiny, repeating pricks of stress\u2014kids to care for, work colleagues to deal with, imperfect relationships to manage, and chores to juggle. If you let these pricks build up, they\u2019ll amount to tons of stress over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Peterson explains, a little thing that happens every day isn\u2019t actually small because most of your life is made of those routine occurrences. So, if your routines regularly prick you with little stressors, that irritation will build up until it bursts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/conditions\/stress-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chronic stress is a well-documented condition<\/a>, and as Peterson says, it can become serious if ignored. Symptoms include aches and pains, fatigue, distractibility, and irritability\u2014each of which can further worsen your ability to deal with the sources of your stress. Fortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/long-term-stress\/\">chronic stress<\/a> is treatable with exercise, getting plenty of sleep, and\/or practicing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/eckhart-tolle-meditation-mindfulness\/\">mindfulness<\/a>. With a clearer headspace, you might then plan to address the roots of your stress, whether they\u2019re from work, home life, or elsewhere.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To solve this problem, Petersons recommends that you do the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Acknowledge your chronic stressors.<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>Take stock of where they are and get clear on why they bother you.<\/li><li><strong>Find ways to deal with them.<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>Think of changes you can make to your routines, or prepare to talk with the people contributing to your stress.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Since these little stressors often involve relationships, Peterson emphasizes that you must get clear about how you feel and communicate that to whomever\u2019s involved. For instance, you might get annoyed daily by your partner\u2019s habit of leaving his dirty laundry around the house. First, <em>acknowledge <\/em>this stressor and get clear about why it bothers you. Then, find a way to fix it\u2014this could be as simple as speaking to your partner and asking for the change you need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By doing this with each of your previously ignored stressors, you\u2019ll clear up emotions that would otherwise fester beneath the surface<\/strong>. You\u2019ll get to know how you really feel on a daily basis, and you\u2019ll often change your daily life for the better. According to Peterson, the alternative is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/accept-death\/\">accept death<\/a> by a thousand cuts\u2014daily misery from suppressed emotions that will trouble you and your loved ones unendingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Address Your Stressors With Nonviolent Communication<\/strong><br><br>Peterson isn\u2019t the first to highlight the importance of effective communication in relationships. In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/nonviolent-communication\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Nonviolent Communication<\/em><\/a>, for instance, the authors point to the importance of acknowledging your emotions whilst maintaining compassion for how the other person feels, too. Nonviolent communication has four specific steps:<br><br>1. <strong>Observe<\/strong>\u2014Pay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/mindfulness-of-emotions\/\">attention to your emotions<\/a> and the situation while avoiding judgments.<br><br>2. <strong>Express<\/strong>\u2014State how you feel with a simple \u201cI feel \u2026 \u201c format. For example, say, \u201dI feel hurt\u201d rather than \u201cYou hurt me.\u201d<br><br>3. <strong>Connect<\/strong>\u2014Connect how you feel to a core need, such as autonomy or integrity.<br><br>4. <strong>Request<\/strong>\u2014Ask for something specific to begin addressing your feelings.<br><br>A nonviolent communication might look like, \u201cSon, I heard you drove recklessly in the snow. I feel scared because I need you to stay safe.
