By doing so, you\u2019ll absorb far more information than when you engage with materials more passively. This is because active recall learning helps build longer and stronger neural connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: A recent study has shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/hands-on-meets-minds-on-new-research-shows-learning-is-more-effective-when-active\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI technology can play a role in helping people learn actively<\/a>. The researchers found that incorporating an AI-based virtual helper in the learning process can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-improve-learning\/\">improve learning<\/a> during hands-on activities. The virtual helper combines physical and virtual reality elements to create an immersive learning experience. They found that when the AI helper was turned on, it encouraged students to engage in critical thinking and discussions, resulting in more thorough learning. He outlines <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/ultralearning\/chapter-8#what-are-the-best-ways-to-self-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several methods to self-test as you\u2019re learning<\/a>, including using flashcards, creating quiz questions for yourself as you\u2019re taking notes that you can try to answer later, and, as Oakley and Schewe also suggest, writing in your own words what you\u2019ve learned after studying an idea.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Memory Is Essential for Learning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You have two types of memory that work together to help you learn new information and skills\u2014working memory and long-term memory.
