It hurts you especially when you&#8217;re meditating because that&#8217;s when your focus should be at its strongest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading for advice from <em>The Mind Illuminated<\/em> on how to stop daydreaming so much, whether you&#8217;re meditating or doing any activity that requires focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-achieve-strong-concentration\"><strong>Achieve Strong Concentration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To achieve strong concentration during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/eckhart-tolle-meditation-mindfulness\/\">meditation<\/a>, you must learn how to stop daydreaming so much<\/strong> (what the authors call \u201cmind-wandering\u201d). Daydreaming is when something in your background awareness captures your attention, causing you to lose concentration on your breath. The authors explain that the seconds leading up to this moment aren\u2019t in your conscious control. So, how do you <em>consciously<\/em> try to minimize daydreaming when realizing you\u2019re daydreaming is an <em>unconscious<\/em> process?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the authors,<strong> by using positive reinforcement, you can consciously train <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/your-subconscious-mind\/\">your subconscious mind<\/a> while meditating. <\/strong>Any time you\u2019re meditating and you suddenly realize you\u2019ve been daydreaming, enjoy it. You can influence how your subconscious guides your behavior by controlling your conscious thoughts. When you repeatedly have positive conscious thoughts, those thoughts <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-power-of-your-subconscious-mind\/1-page-summary#method-3-create-automatic-behavior-using-conscious-repetition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leave positive impressions on your subconscious<\/a>. Categorizing a thought as soon as it surfaces prevents it from continuing or evolving into a new thought. This interruption halts your daydreaming so you can return to concentrating on your breath.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, <strong>make these categories <em>neutral<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2014<\/em>this prevents you from judging your thought as \u201cgood,\u201d or \u201cbad,\u201d which might spawn more thoughts about its goodness or badness. For instance, mentally reviewing your chores is \u201clist-making\u201d, remembering yesterday\u2019s weather is \u201crecalling\u201d, and thinking about how to ask your boss for a raise is \u201cbrainstorming.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: The authors\u2019 emphasis on making categories <em>neutral <\/em>echoes a lesson in Lao Tzu\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/tao-te-ching\"><em>Tao Te Ching<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>a foundational text of Taoism (a Chinese philosophy). Lao <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/tzu-tao-heart\/\">Tzu<\/a> says that you should <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/tao-te-ching\/section-1\">refrain from categorizing your surroundings and other people as \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad,\u201d<\/a> and he adds that such categorization warps how you see reality. For example, if you think of the city as \u201cbad\u201d and the countryside as \u201cgood,\u201d you might begin to view <em>everything <\/em>associated with the countryside (like its people and industries) as bad.
