These insights, which <em>The Mind Illuminated<\/em> calls \u201crealizations,\u201d enable you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/eckhart-tolle-enlightenment\/\">reach enlightenment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve reached enlightenment, you and everyone else around you will experience the benefits listed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-spiritual-awakening-benefits-you\">How Spiritual Awakening Benefits You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors say that<strong> one of the benefits of spiritual awakening is that you experience deep contentment because the five realizations free you from suffering. <\/strong>According to the authors, you suffer when you crave for pleasure to continue and pain to end.<strong> <\/strong>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>After your vacation ends, you long for it to keep going.<\/li><li>Your persistent toothache makes it hard to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-enjoy-everyday-life\/\">enjoy everyday life<\/a>.<\/li><li>You find the pain of losing a loved one unbearable.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because pleasure is impermanent and pain is unavoidable, you\u2019re in a constant state of craving, and so you constantly suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, <strong>if you\u2019re enlightened, the five realizations each help to cease your cravings. <\/strong>For instance,<strong> <\/strong>you might recognize that your cravings are <em>impermanent<\/em><strong> <\/strong>and that they bring you <em>suffering<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When enlightenment ends your cravings, <strong>you enjoy pleasurable experiences <\/strong><strong><em>more<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>because they feel sufficient and you don\u2019t worry about them ending. For instance, you wouldn\u2019t feel a looming sense of dread as your vacation came to a close.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: How can you enjoy everyday pleasurable experiences more if you haven\u2019t yet achieved enlightenment? Psychology research suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-science-behind-behavior\/201511\/how-enjoy-pretty-much-any-experience-much-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you can do so<\/a> by 1) planning for them in advance (as this builds pleasant anticipation) and 2) staying present while experiencing them. For example, plan a picnic in a park with your friends a week in advance, and while you\u2019re there, avoid using your cell phones so you can fully appreciate nature, the food, and your conversations.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, when you\u2019re enlightened, <strong>painful experiences bother you less <\/strong>because you no longer experience cravings to end pain.<strong> <\/strong>You experience pain as it really is: an impermanent physical and\/or emotional sensation. A toothache is a painful sensation that will pass, and the loss of your friend is a painful emotion that will also pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Even if you haven\u2019t yet achieved enlightenment, there are still ways to manage painful experiences. In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/self-compassion\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Self-Compassion<\/em><\/a>, psychologist Kristin Neff says that you can do so by <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/self-compassion\/1-page-summary#what-is-self-compassion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">practicing self-compassion<\/a>. When you\u2019re suffering, <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/self-compassion\/1-page-summary#practice-2-be-kind-to-yourself\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gently comfort yourself<\/a>; recognize that suffering <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/self-compassion\/1-page-summary#practice-3-recognize-that-suffering-is-the-universal-human-connection-point\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is a universal experience<\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/self-compassion\/1-page-summary#practice-1-be-mindful-of-your-suffering-as-is\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refrain from either exaggerating or downplaying your suffering<\/a>. For example, if you bomb an interview, first comfort yourself by remembering that your success at interviews doesn\u2019t reflect your worthiness as a person. Then, recognize that <em>many<\/em> people find interviews challenging. Finally, take it easy for a day or two so you can recover from the painful experience\u2014but avoid wallowing for a whole week.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Enlightenment and the Four Noble Truths<\/strong><br><br>These ideas about suffering, craving, and ceasing your cravings comprise the Buddha\u2019s primary teachings, and they\u2019re often organized into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldhistory.org\/Four_Noble_Truths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Four Noble Truths<\/a>:<br><br><strong>Truth 1 (dukkha): <\/strong>Life is full of suffering. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learnreligions.com\/why-do-buddhists-avoid-attachment-449714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Some argue that \u201cunsatisfactoriness\u201d is a better translation of dukkha than \u201csuffering\u201d<\/a> because it captures how constant craving makes us feel persistently dissatisfied.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Truth 2 (samudaya): <\/strong>You suffer because you crave <em>permanence<\/em> (such as youthful looks, enduring happiness, and long-lasting possessions). Some translations of this Truth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learnreligions.com\/why-do-buddhists-avoid-attachment-449714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">call our craving for permanent pleasure \u201cclinging\u201d or \u201cattachment,\u201d<\/a> and they call our craving for pain to end \u201caversion\u201d or \u201chatred.\u201d&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Truth 3 (nirodha): <\/strong>You can end this suffering by realizing that you\u2019ll never satisfy these cravings for permanence because everything is <em>impermanent.&nbsp;<\/em><br><br><strong>Truth 4 (magga): <\/strong>By living a lifestyle known as the Eightfold Path (which we\u2019ll explore later), you can cease your cravings permanently and reach enlightenment.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Enlightenment Benefits Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors also say that <strong>your enlightenment benefits others. <\/strong>As previously noted, enlightenment is the result of strong mindfulness, and you continue to act mindfully when you\u2019re enlightened: You behave intentionally rather than automatically. Therefore, you improve others\u2019 lives by treating them with compassion. Furthermore, because you no longer chase cravings when you\u2019re enlightened, you harm others less\u2014for instance, you won\u2019t cheat on your partner to pursue your craving for a more exciting relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cultivating Morality Through the Eightfold Path<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors of <em>TMI <\/em>don\u2019t explore in depth how to ensure your enlightened behavior benefits others, but the Eightfold Path\u2014Buddha\u2019s eight steps for achieving enlightenment and living a moral life\u2014provides additional guidance. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/bitesize\/guides\/zj4g4qt\/revision\/6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The steps of the Eightfold Path are:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Right Speech: Avoiding hurtful speech, such as lies and unkind words<\/li><li>Right Action: Treating others with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/love-and-compassion\/\">love and compassion<\/a>; abstaining from indulgence<\/li><li>Right Livelihood: Pursuing work that contributes positively to society<\/li><li>Right Effort: Eliminating cravings and harmful emotions<\/li><li>Right Mindfulness: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/cultivate-mindfulness\/\">Cultivating mindfulness<\/a><\/li><li>Right Concentration: Cultivating concentration<\/li><li>Right Understanding: Understanding the Buddha\u2019s teachings<\/li><li>Right Intention: Cultivating mindsets that help with understanding these teachings<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>TMI<\/em> primarily focuses on the fifth and sixth steps, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration<em>. <\/em>The first three steps\u2014Right Speech, Right Action, and Right Livelihood\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buddhanet.net\/4noble24.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">together are called <em>sila <\/em>(\u201cdiscipline\u201d)<em>, <\/em>and they concern morality and how you treat others.<\/a> If you haven\u2019t yet reached enlightenment and therefore still experience cravings that drive you to harm others, sila may offer guidance on minimizing the pain you cause. For instance, the step of <a href=\"https:\/\/tricycle.org\/magazine\/noble-eightfold-path\/#:~:text=and%20right%20livelihood.-,Right%20Speech,-Right%20speech%20means\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Right Speech<\/a> says that you should only speak when you have something useful and gentle to say, and you should avoid lying and gossiping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in following the three steps of sila as part of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/eckhart-tolle-meditation-mindfulness\/\">meditation<\/a> practice, consider listening to <a href=\"https:\/\/bswa.org\/teaching\/sila-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dharma talks about sila<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/plumvillage.org\/community\/international-sangha-directory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joining a <em>sangha<\/em><\/a> (a community of Buddhist practitioners) that emphasizes cultivating sila.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are the benefits of spiritual awakening?
