The agency says the proposal will prevent thousands of deaths related to the chemicals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to learn about the dangers of forever chemicals and the EPA&#8217;s plan to reduce them in our water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hidden Dangers: Forever Chemicals in Our Water Supply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sdwa\/and-polyfluoroalkyl-substances-pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plan<\/a> to eliminate harmful &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/09\/13\/the-battle-over-who-pays-to-clean-up-chemicals-00056136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forever chemicals<\/a>&#8221; in the water we drink could cost local utilities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/data-graphics\/water-pfas-clean-costs-trickle-rcna80504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">millions of dollars<\/a> and send the financial pain trickling down to customers. The agency says the new, national drinking water regulations would prevent thousands of deaths and reduce tens of thousands of illnesses linked to PFAS, or forever chemicals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What exactly are forever chemicals? Why is the EPA cracking down on them? Who will foot the bill for their remediation? We\u2019ll examine experts\u2019 views on these questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-forever-chemicals\">What Are Forever Chemicals?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Forever chemicals, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/pfas\/health-effects\/overview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">man-made chemicals<\/a> used in the US since the 1940s. They\u2019re found in nonstick cookware, water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant fabrics and carpets, cosmetics, firefighting foam, and other products that resist water, heat, stains, and grease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Forever chemicals leech into water, soil, and the air during their production and during use of products containing them.<\/strong> The chemicals are present in the blood of <a href=\"https:\/\/health.usnews.com\/wellness\/articles\/dangers-of-pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">97% of Americans<\/a> and, because they don\u2019t break down, they persist in the environment and build up in humans\u2019 and animals\u2019 bodies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to forever chemicals&#8217; composition and dissolvability in water, traditional treatment technologies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sciencematters\/reducing-pfas-drinking-water-treatment-technologies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cannot remove them from drinking water<\/a>\u2014a troubling reality given that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>An estimated <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.estlett.0c00713\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>200 million Americans<\/strong><\/a><strong> drink PFAS-contaminated water.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Ongoing exposure to PFAS is linked to increased risk of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/health.usnews.com\/wellness\/articles\/dangers-of-pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>kidney, prostate, and testicular cancers; thyroid disease; and liver damage<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-epa-s-plan\">The EPA\u2019s Plan&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The EPA\u2019s proposed drinking water regulation comes in response to the agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/cancer-linked-pfas-known-as-forever-chemicals-could-be-banned-in-drinking-water-for-first-time-4b515519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 finding<\/a> that the chemicals can cause damage at levels \u201cmuch lower than previously understood\u201d and that <strong>virtually no level of exposure to them is safe for humans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If finalized, the proposal will limit the maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) of six forever chemicals found in drinking water to their lowest detectable limit\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/health.usnews.com\/wellness\/articles\/dangers-of-pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">.004 parts per trillion<\/a>\u2014and require the more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/dwreginfo\/information-about-public-water-systems#:~:text=A%20public%20water%20system%20may,or%20on%20an%20occasional%20basis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">148,000 public water systems across the US<\/a> to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sdwa\/and-polyfluoroalkyl-substances-pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monitor for the six forever chemicals<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make the public aware of their levels.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reduce levels exceeding designated standards.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The EPA says the plan would also remove many additional PFAS that co-occur with the six it seeks to regulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-proposal-s-price-tag\">The Proposal\u2019s Price Tag&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the EPA\u2019s plan would be a win for Americans\u2019 health, experts say it would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/data-graphics\/water-pfas-clean-costs-trickle-rcna80504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hard on their wallets<\/a>: <strong>The national cost for public water systems to develop infrastructure and treat PFAS could <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awwa.org\/AWWA-Articles\/awwa-statement-on-proposed-pfas-drinking-water-standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>exceed $3.8 billion annually<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Experts, including state environmental agencies and utilities, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/data-graphics\/water-pfas-clean-costs-trickle-rcna80504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>question whether the EPA\u2019s new goals are attainable<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>due to the high costs\u2014which could get even higher. A growing number of local governments, water <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/bargaining-power-of-suppliers-understanding-michael-porter\/\">suppliers<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/stateline.org\/2022\/09\/22\/states-take-on-pfas-forever-chemicals-with-bans-lawsuits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">state attorneys general<\/a> are suing chemical companies for damages related to forever chemicals in water contamination\u2014and cleanup costs are estimated at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/09\/13\/the-battle-over-who-pays-to-clean-up-chemicals-00056136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$400 billion<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-looking-ahead\">Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the EPA proposal is finalized, states will have three years to comply, but who will bear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-be-financially-responsible\/\">financial responsibility<\/a> for the plan remains to be seen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, experts say that Americans\u2019 ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/health.usnews.com\/wellness\/articles\/dangers-of-pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">avoid PFAS and their\u2019 potential negative health and fiscal impacts<\/a> is limited: The chemicals are omnipresent, manufacturers aren\u2019t transparent about their use in products, and legal regulations around PFAS are in only their fledgling stages. However, they say <strong>there are several things you can do to take control:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/document\/EPA-HQ-OW-2022-0114-0027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Submit comments<\/a> on the EPA\u2019s plan during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sdwa\/and-polyfluoroalkyl-substances-pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public comment period<\/a>, which is open until May 30, 2023.
