She acknowledges that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-achieve-big-goals\/\">achieving big goals<\/a> takes a few years and provides practical advice for making the journey toward your ideal self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more to discover how to figure out who you want to be\u2014the first step on that journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-figure-out-who-you-want-to-be\">Figure Out Who You Want to Be<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-change-your-life-for-the-better\/\">changing your life<\/a>, Lordan argues, is to <strong>identify your ideal future self<\/strong>\u2014which Lordan calls your \u201cME+\u201d and which we\u2019ll call your ideal self. Lordan&#8217;s advice on how to figure out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-become-the-person-you-want-to-be-2\/\">who you want to be<\/a> entails using your imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Picture a typical workday in the life of your ideal self\u2014anywhere between two and 10 years from now. What is their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/job-titles\/\">job title<\/a> and the field in which they work? What kinds of tasks fill up their day? If you\u2019re uncertain about the former, focus on the latter, imagining what work tasks you\u2019d love to do all day. Ideally, these tasks will <em>feel<\/em> significant\u2014both in your own life and with regard to the impact you have on others\u2014as we tend to try harder to achieve goals that we deem significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/what-color-is-your-parachute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>What Color Is Your Parachute?<\/em><\/a>, Richard Nelson Bolles suggests an alternate method for identifying the career you\u2019d like to pursue: <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/what-color-is-your-parachute#what-job-should-you-try-for\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Do the \u201cflower exercise,\u201d<\/a> in which you create a one-page visual summary of your career goals where each petal of a flower represents a different element. The petals are compatibility with people (the kinds of people you like working with), workplace conditions, skills (what tasks you\u2019re good at), purpose, knowledge (what you already know that excites you), money (how much you need to earn), and location (where you want to live). Then, <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/what-color-is-your-parachute#two-approaches-to-finding-a-job\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brainstorm what careers might provide you with the elements<\/a> you want, and talk to people who work in those fields to see if their jobs are a good fit.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure that the future self you envision reflects your <em>true<\/em> desires. Lordan cautions against falling victim to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/cognitive-bias-definition\/\">cognitive bias<\/a> called the <strong>ambiguity effect<\/strong>: a tendency to choose the option (goal) where you <em>know<\/em> the probability of a favorable outcome\u2014even if you\u2019re not as excited about that goal. For example, you\u2019re more likely to apply to law school (which has clear rates of acceptance) than try to become a singer (which has an unclear probability of success) even if it\u2019s your lifelong dream to become a singer. Additionally, avoid the <strong>bandwagon effect<\/strong>\u2014the tendency to do whatever the people around you are doing\u2014and <strong>reactance bias<\/strong>\u2014the rebellious instinct to stick with something specifically because others don\u2019t like it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-make-better-decisions\/\">How to Make Better Choices<\/a><\/strong><br><br>How can you avoid falling victim to the ambiguity effect, reactance bias, and the bandwagon&nbsp;effect? Some experts suggest that you can limit the power of the ambiguity effect by <a href=\"https:\/\/thedecisionlab.com\/biases\/ambiguity-effect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">focusing on the potential positives<\/a> rather than the negatives of the ambiguous choice. Additionally, since <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/influence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Influence<\/em><\/a> author Robert Cialdini points out that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/influence\/chapter-7#maximizing-choices-the-magnetic-pull-of-scarcity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reactance bias is partly a reaction to a perceived loss of control<\/a> or autonomy, reminding yourself that only <em>you <\/em>control your choices may help you avoid falling victim to reactance bias.<br><br>You might also remind yourself that following the bandwagon effect and making choices that reflect not what <em>you <\/em>want but rather <em>others<\/em>\u2019 opinions of you may be a recipe for unhappiness. The authors of <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-courage-to-be-disliked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Courage to Be Disliked<\/em><\/a> argue that unhappy people believe that the key to unhappiness is to be recognized as \u201cgood\u201d by others, and so <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-courage-to-be-disliked\/1-page-summary#unhappy-people-aim-for-external-approval\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they make life choices that are meant to earn others\u2019 approval<\/a>. However, these choices come at a great cost; even if unhappy people successfully earn others\u2019 approval, they ultimately end up living others\u2019 lives because they follow others\u2019 expectations and so sacrifice their own desires.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve identified your ideal self, Lordan contends that you must <strong>figure out what skills your ideal self has that you need to develop. <\/strong>Ask yourself: Why am I not currently able to be this ideal self? If you\u2019re unsure, find some people whose jobs are similar to those of your ideal self, and determine what skills they use regularly that you lack. Pick three to five skills that you can reasonably develop: You should be able to develop them by working on them a little bit every week, and developing them shouldn\u2019t cost prohibitive amounts of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/ultralearning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Ultralearning<\/em><\/a>, Scott Young also recommends doing some research before partaking in any major learning project. If this is a career-related skill, your learning is likely motivated by the desire to achieve some kind of external goal. If so, you should clarify that this skill will <em>actually<\/em> help you achieve the said goal (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-become-your-ideal-self\/\">becoming your ideal self<\/a>), such as by speaking with other people who already have achieved that goal.
