Are you struggling to find time to relax in the busy modern world? If so, you could benefit from meditation: a practice that many people find helpful for reducing stress, sharpening focus, and getting their thoughts in order. In fact, a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailymeditate.com\/meditation-quote-3-you-should-sit-in-meditation-for-twenty-minutes-every-day-unless-youre-too-busy-then-you-should-sit-for-an-hour-zen-proverb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zen proverb<\/a> says you should meditate for 20 minutes every day\u2014and if you think you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/always-busy\/\">too busy<\/a> for that, then you should probably meditate for an <em>hour<\/em> every day. People from all walks of life, both religious and secular, have practiced and written about meditation for thousands of years, and it continues to be a popular relaxation method today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tips-for-starting-to-meditate\"><strong>Tips for Starting to Meditate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some meditation tips for beginners, regardless of which style (or styles) of meditation you practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tip-1-start-small\"><strong>Tip #1: Start Small&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling to figure out how meditation can fit into your schedule, or if getting started seems daunting, begin with very short meditation sessions. For example, in <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/you-are-a-badass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>You Are a Badass<\/em><\/a>, self-help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/you-are-a-badass-author\/\">author Jen Sincero<\/a> says that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/you-are-a-badass\/section-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">just five minutes a day<\/a> is enough to get you started. You can then start making your meditations longer at whatever rate feels natural to you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tip-2-build-a-support-network\"><strong>Tip #2: Build a Support Network<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/emotional-intelligence-2-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Emotional Intelligence 2.0<\/em><\/a>, the authors suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/emotional-intelligence-2-0\/chapter-6#seek-external-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seeking outside support<\/a> when tackling difficult or daunting goals (like building a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/meditation-practice\/\">meditation practice<\/a>). They offer these two strategies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) Talk with a third party.<\/strong> When you\u2019re in the midst of a challenging situation, it\u2019s hard to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-look-at-the-bigger-picture\/\">see the bigger picture<\/a>. Get an unbiased outside perspective to help you keep things objective and rational as you decipher your emotions and determine the best route forward. When possible, get advice from an expert\u2014ask them about their methods, then try to implement some of their suggestions into your day-to-day life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2) Publicize your goals.<\/strong> Working toward goals can be stressful. This stress often makes people abandon their objectives before they achieve them, especially when no one knows about them. When creating goals for yourself, share them and ask other people to hold you accountable. This gives you a support system to motivate you when faced with emotional obstacles that make you want to quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tip-3-try-active-meditation\"><strong>Tip #3: Try Active Meditation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Meditation doesn\u2019t have to mean sitting quietly. <strong>If you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/feeling-agitated\/\">feeling restless<\/a>, you could try a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/10-happier\/part-3#how-to-start-meditating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>walking meditation<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> as journalist Dan Harris describes in <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/10-happier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>10% Happier<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>Find a space where you can walk comfortably. Harris notes that walking meditation isn\u2019t the same as mindlessly pacing\u2014you\u2019re still focusing and constantly refocusing your attention when it wanders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A variation on walking meditation is what self-help author Cal Newport (<a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/deep-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Deep Work<\/em><\/a>) calls <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/deep-work\/chapter-6#3-practice-productive-meditation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>productive meditation<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u2014thinking about a problem while doing a low-intensity physical activity<\/strong>, such as walking or showering. This helps with problem-solving in two ways: First, the activity typically takes you away from distractions like your smartphone.
