According to Kindra Hall&#8217;s book <em>Stories That Stick<\/em>, this is the story of how your company began and the person behind it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue reading to learn how to use a Founder Story to help you stand out from competitive businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-your-business-s-origin-story\">Your Business&#8217;s Origin Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Founder Story is useful when you&#8217;re courting investors, attracting new customers, or recruiting team members to your organization. According to Hall, <strong>the purpose of the Founder Story is to show what makes you stand out from the competition<\/strong>. In this case, you\u2019re not selling a product, you\u2019re selling the person behind the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: According to Jeffrey Gitomer, author of the <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/little-red-book-of-selling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Little Red Book of Selling<\/em><\/a>, the founder isn&#8217;t the only one in the company whose story matters. In his advice to salespeople, he argues that your customers \u201cbuy\u201d you before they buy what you\u2019re selling. For example, they buy your knowledge, your expertise, your humor, or your character. Therefore, he recommends that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/little-red-book-of-selling\/part-2#principle-4-develop-your-brand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anyone in sales, not just the founder, develop a story that communicates their personal brand<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Founder Story is more prescriptive than the other core stories. Your character must be the founder and the story should convey the passion and perseverance of that person. You want your audience to walk away impressed by how hard the founder worked to get where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: The Founder Story, as described by Hall, closely aligns with the narrative archetype of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-the-heros-journey\/\">hero\u2019s journey<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterclass.com\/articles\/writing-101-what-is-the-heros-journey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Both narratives follow a similar structure or sequence of events<\/a> in which the protagonist faces a challenge or obstacle that sets them on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/a-journey-of-self-discovery\/\">journey of discovery<\/a> and transformation. Along the way, they encounter allies and enemies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-overcome-obstacles\/\">overcome obstacles<\/a>, and face setbacks and challenges. Eventually, they reach a point of crisis or climax where they must confront their fears and overcome the final obstacle to achieve their goal.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Procter &amp; Gamble (P&amp;G) is an example of a company that uses its Founder Story to inspire new employees to become more invested in the company and immersed in its culture. For instance, new P&amp;G hires read &#8220;The Book,&#8221; which describes the company&#8217;s history and the founders&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/clarifying-your-values\/\">core values<\/a>, and new employees also take time to visit a life-size marble sculpture of William Cooper Procter, who was responsible for growing the Procter family\u2019s business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall emphasizes that you don\u2019t have to be the founder to tell the Founder Story. If you don\u2019t know your company\u2019s founding story, ask! Then, as you retell it, talk about the first time you heard the founder\u2019s story and how it impacted you. The founder\u2019s story is valuable, regardless of who&#8217;s telling it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>When to Avoid a Founder\u2019s Story<\/strong><br><br>There are times when the Founder\u2019s Story isn&#8217;t worth telling. For instance, if a founder is embroiled in controversy or hasn\u2019t delivered on promises, the company is better off focusing on telling a story that doesn\u2019t position the founder as the protagonist.&nbsp;<br><br>For example, Uber couldn\u2019t use this tactic when its founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/3\/6\/14791080\/uber-sexism-scandal-strike-waymo-lawsuit-travis-kalanick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Travis Kalanick faced a series of scandals related to the company\u2019s workplace culture, treatment of drivers, and business practices<\/a>. Kalanick was forced to resign in 2017 following allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination. Instead, Uber chose to highlight the cultural shifts ushered in by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstoday.in\/technology\/news\/story\/uber-ceo-dara-khosrowshahi-went-undercover-as-driver-and-delivery-agent-for-months-heres-what-he-learnt-376667-2023-04-09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the new CEO, who has made headlines for going undercover as an Uber driver<\/a> in order to better understand drivers\u2019 experience.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a Founder Story?
