What is universal consciousness<\/a>? How do we access it? What happens when we do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to psychiatrist David Hawkins, consciousness is the ticket to knowledge and, ultimately, truth. He contends that, as well as having individual consciousness, we all have access to a universal consciousness that’s all-knowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is Consciousness?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What is universal consciousness? Let’s start with consciousness in general before moving on to what it means on a grand scale. Hawkins defines \u201cconsciousness\u201d as the ability to experience and understand yourself<\/a> and your environment. Hawkins says this is possible because your brain is like a biological computer: It takes in data through your senses, then processes that data with electrical and chemical signals, resulting in what you perceive as thoughts and experiences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Shortform note: The brain-as-computer metaphor is an old one, and hotly debated<\/a>. Some experts argue that viewing thought as just a series of inputs and outputs misses the point of consciousness: that you\u2019re not just a machine responding to stimuli, but rather a living being who experiences <\/em>the world<\/a> around you. Although Hawkins uses the brain-as-computer metaphor, he arguably addresses these critiques of it by proposing a definition of consciousness that emphasizes experiencing the world.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawkins also says that your mind has access to a universal consciousness shared by all people<\/strong>\u2014the universe\u2019s internet, to extend the computer metaphor. The idea of a communal pool of human knowledge is not a new one. Psychoanalyst Carl Jung called it the \u201ccollective unconscious\u201d: a collection of facts and beliefs that all humans share, seemingly without ever learning them. Religions have called it God, and they seek to access its knowledge either by understanding God\u2019s will (a common theme in Christianity, for example) or by uniting with God directly (as in Hinduism). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever term you prefer, Hawkins says your connection to the universal consciousness allows you to instantly know whether something is true or false,<\/strong> so long as you can receive and understand the universal consciousness\u2019s signals. In other words, it\u2019s the ultimate source of truth, and with a strong enough connection to it, you become effectively omniscient. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Shortform note: Another possible explanation for this apparent omniscience is intuition<\/a>: when your mind subconsciously processes information and arrives at conclusions without the need for conscious, rational thought<\/a>. Psychologists say that your senses take in significantly more information than you\u2019re aware of because your brain filters<\/a> out irrelevant details. However, by reviewing this filtered information and looking for patterns and connections, your subconscious generates conclusions quickly, and seemingly from nothing\u2014you instantly know the truth, as Hawkins might put it.)  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is the Universal Consciousness?<\/strong>

Hawkins alternately describes the universal consciousness as something internal\u2014buried deep within each person\u2019s psyche\u2014and external; a single entity that we all connect to. This description departs from other interpretations that define consciousness as either<\/em> internal or external.

For instance, Jung\u2019s collective unconscious<\/a> is internal. Jung theorized that everyone has some inherited beliefs, fears, and instincts in common, but not that human minds are connected to a single external database of information. On the other hand, God (in any religion) is an external being or force<\/a>.

Combining these ideas, Hawkins is arguably saying that the consciousness itself is external, but there\u2019s something hidden inside each of us that\u2019s able to link with it. As we\u2019ll see shortly, Hawkins defines the highest level of consciousness (enlightenment) as a state where we cease to think of ourselves as individual people, and instead, we become living extensions of the universal consciousness\u2014in other words, enlightenment is when this internal\/external binary ceases to exist. <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Measuring Human Consciousness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since consciousness means both \u201cawareness\u201d and \u201cunderstanding,\u201d it logically follows that consciousness exists on a spectrum from no consciousness (having no awareness or understanding) to omniscience: total awareness and perfect knowledge of everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawkins developed a scale\u2014what he calls the consciousness map<\/em>\u2014that measures the strength of your connection to the universal source of truth. According to Hawkins, the numbers indicate the energetic frequency of your consciousness (in other words, your consciousness level), with higher frequencies indicating more awareness and understanding than lower ones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Shortform note: Rhonda Byrne\u2019s best-selling self-help book The Secret<\/em><\/a> <\/em>goes into more detail about the energetic frequencies of thoughts<\/a> (or consciousness, as Hawkins puts it). However, while Hawkins describes energetic frequencies in terms of how high or low they are, Byrne describes them in terms of how positive or negative they are. According to Byrne, each of us is like a living transmission tower broadcasting thoughts into the universe. Each thought has a specific frequency\u2014similar to a radio frequency\u2014which the universe picks up and transmits back to us as life experiences. In short, positive thoughts<\/a> attract positive experiences, while negative thoughts attract negative experiences.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Consciousness Scale<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The consciousness scale includes information about key beliefs, emotions, and actions that define the various levels of consciousness.<\/strong> For instance, at very low levels of consciousness, Hawkins says you feel deeply unhappy and tend to want to hurt the people around you (or yourself). The lowest rating on the consciousness scale is level 20 to 30, which Hawkins labels as shame<\/em>. Someone at this consciousness level feels that God is hateful, is constantly embarrassed about themselves and their life, and might even experience suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Higher levels of consciousness<\/a>, particularly those above 300 on Hawkins\u2019s scale, are defined by positive emotions such as compassion, calmness, and happiness. People at this level think of God as kind and caring, and they view their lives as enjoyable and fulfilling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll explore this consciousness scale and its implications in greater detail in the next section. For now, Hawkins\u2019s crucial point is that you need a consciousness level of at least 200 (what we\u2019ll call \u201cbravery\u201d) to interpret the universe\u2019s signals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calibrating Truth With Kinesiology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once your awareness\u2014in other words, your consciousness\u2014reaches a high enough level to connect to the universal consciousness, Hawkins <\/em>explains that you can instantly tell whether something is true or false by using simple, scientifically proven tests. The same tests will also indicate whether something is good or bad for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawkins spent decades studying kinesiology, which is the science of how the human body moves. Through his studies, he found that the body and mind are intrinsically linked. Therefore, if your mental connection to the universal consciousness is strong enough (meaning 200 or higher), you can use basic physical tests to interpret the truth signals you\u2019re receiving. <\/strong>Hawkins calls this applied kinesiology<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Connection Between Body and Mind<\/strong>

Some research supports Hawkins\u2019s claim that the mind and body are connected<\/a> and that they can influence each other in countless ways. For example, someone who\u2019s physically unhealthy is likely to be anxious, stressed, and lethargic\u2014all characteristics of poor mental <\/em>health.

The connection also works the other way around: For instance, someone who\u2019s chronically stressed can have physical symptoms<\/a> ranging from muscle aches to insomnia to breathing problems. In other words, poor mental health will damage your physical health.

The good news is that physical health and mental health don\u2019t just harm each other. They can also reinforce one another\u2014being in good physical health improves your mental well-being, and vice versa.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

How Truth and Falsehood Affect Your Muscles<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Hawkins describes several different kinesiology tests, but the common theme is that your muscles become weaker when you\u2019re exposed to something that\u2019s untrue, unhealthy, or undesirable. For instance, if you say something true and then lift a dumbbell, you\u2019ll find it much easier than trying to lift that same dumbbell after saying something false. Crucially, this isn\u2019t testing whether you <\/strong>think<\/em><\/strong> the statement is true; it tests whether the statement is <\/strong>objectively <\/em><\/strong>true, <\/strong>which is possible because of your connection to the universal consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same holds true for testing whether something is good or bad for you. For example, setting a glass of soda in front of you will make that dumbbell much harder to lift than doing the same with a glass of water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different Perspectives on Applied Kinesiology<\/strong>

Applied kinesiology is popular among chiropractors and other alternative medicine<\/a> practitioners, who say that it\u2019s a noninvasive and highly accurate method of diagnosis. Many healthcare providers seek training in applied kinesiology and offer it as a service<\/a> to their patients. For example, they commonly use applied kinesiology to identify food allergies<\/a>\u2014in other words, whether a particular food is good or bad for the patient.

However, some experts in the larger scientific community claim that applied kinesiology is pseudoscience<\/a>. Some studies have found that applied kinesiology is no more accurate than random guessing<\/a>, and scientific reviews say that the work published by supporters of applied kinesiology is scientifically unsound and untrustworthy<\/a>. In short, these doctors and scientists found that claims about applied kinesiology were not verifiable, and test results were not repeatable.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
