When you\u2019re disciplined, you act with moderation, and you prize your ability to have total control over yourself. Like all humans, you face temptations, but you can resist these temptations when you need to\u2014and if you <em>do<\/em> choose to indulge in them, you do so with restraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-power-of-discipline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Power of Discipline<\/em><\/a>, Daniel Walter agrees that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-power-of-discipline\/1-page-summary#what-is-self-discipline-and-why-do-we-struggle-with-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discipline is the ability to fight temptations and instant gratification<\/a> and ultimately act in your best interests. However, his definition of discipline doesn\u2019t include the ability to indulge in temptations with restraint; it also doesn\u2019t include a sense of self-satisfaction that stems from having self-control. Additionally, Walter suggests that we struggle with discipline due to four biological tendencies: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/why-do-people-resist-change\/\">resisting change<\/a> that makes us uncomfortable, overestimating our abilities, procrastinating, and setting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/impossible-expectations\/\">unrealistic expectations<\/a>.)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holiday asserts that there are four benefits of discipline:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefit #1: Keeps You From Going to Extremes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discipline prevents you from taking the four cardinal virtues of Stoicism (courage, wisdom, justice, and temperance or discipline) to extremes<\/strong> and turning them into flaws. For example, extreme courage might also be characterized as recklessness. Since discipline is predicated on practicing moderation, it prevents you from taking the cardinal virtues too far and thus <em>not<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/living-a-good-life\/\">living a good life<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: It\u2019s clear how too much courage can harm you, but how can you take being just or wise too far? Holiday doesn\u2019t specify, but other experts explain that the <a href=\"https:\/\/iep.utm.edu\/stoiceth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stoic virtue of justice involves honesty<\/a>, so you might be unvirtuous if you\u2019re unnecessarily honest with someone and hurt their feelings for no reason. However, it\u2019s not clear how being too wise can become a flaw.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefit #2: Leads to a Good Life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discipline leads to a good life<\/strong>. Holiday explains that when you\u2019re disciplined, you make better choices with your time: You regularly work to fulfill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/your-life-purpose\/\">your purpose<\/a> (which we\u2019ll discuss in detail later) rather than wasting time with less important endeavors, such as watching Netflix every evening. The more time you spend working on your purpose, the more likely you are to fulfill it\u2014and thus reap the benefits of doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Unless you develop discipline, you may never achieve your best life. In <em>The <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-power-of-discipline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Power of Discipline<\/em><\/a>, Walter argues that <em>not<\/em> making good choices with your time (by wasting it on unimportant endeavors) is not only undisciplined, but it can also <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-power-of-discipline\/1-page-summary#tendency-3-procrastination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce your levels of self-discipline<\/a> and make you even <em>less <\/em>likely to spend time on and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/fulfill-your-purpose\/\">fulfill your purpose<\/a> than you already were. He argues that self-discipline is a skill that takes practice to develop. So the more you procrastinate (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/immediate-gratification-2\/\">instant gratification<\/a> that\u2019s the opposite of self-discipline), the more habitual the procrastination becomes, and the weaker your ability to make productive choices becomes.)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefit #3: Creates Better Emotional Control<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Holiday asserts that <strong>discipline lets you keep your good life<\/strong> because it stops you from allowing your emotions or baser urges to take control. When you\u2019re disciplined, you take a moment to actively <em>choose<\/em> how to react to any situation that you face. As a result, even if you feel powerful emotions, they don\u2019t dictate your actions and cause harmful consequences. For example, despite your fury at your boss, you listen quietly to her scolding and choose to look for another job on your own terms rather than exploding at her and getting fired.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Not everybody agrees that you\u2019re <em>able<\/em> to choose how to react in any situation. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/thinking-fast-and-slow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Thinking, Fast and Slow<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/who-is-daniel-kahneman\/\">psychologist Daniel Kahneman<\/a> argues that automatic (fast) impressions arise from our senses and feelings (he calls this the mind\u2019s \u201cSystem 1\u201d). Like Holiday, he acknowledges that these impressions can lead us to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/make-bad-choices\/\">make poor choices<\/a> that cause harmful consequences. But he believes it\u2019s not feasible to <em>always<\/em> check them through our disciplined rational mind (\u201cSystem 2\u201d) because it\u2019s too slow. He suggests a compromise: Be aware of situations where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/system-1-thinking-kahneman\/\">System 1 thinking<\/a> might lead to errors, and avoid those errors when the stakes are high by using System 2.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefit #4: Increases Self-Awareness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Holiday argues that <strong>discipline makes you self-aware<\/strong>. You\u2019re able to recognize when you risk overindulging in something potentially harmful and thus stop yourself from doing so. This is true both of physical pursuits, like food or alcohol, and of certain character traits.
